Despite the fact that Mofokeng worked as a photojournalist for various publications during the 1980s when there was great demand from the international press for images of violence and unrest in the townships, in his artistic practice Mofokeng preferred to focus on how people lived their everyday lives and sustained communities under the apartheid system. In his "Township" series, Mofokeng documented the norms of life in the townships -- such as the culture of the shebeens (the unlicensed bars and clubs that served as centers for social life in Soweto and other townships).
