The street was wet and puddles covered the sidewalk of the campus. Jamie was alone, his lit class had run late and he had to hurry. Cold and wet, the man rushed over the grass and stepped out on to the sidewalk the rain battering against the dark umbrella in his hands. He wanted a cigarette, but it could wait till he got to the car. He stomped through a puddle and watched the dirty water splash about before he ignored the crosswalk and darted into the street to cross.
The sudden flash of light and the screech of a horn had Jamie whirling in surprise. Before him a dark car screeched to a halt skidding on the wet pavement. Frozen in Panic Jamie threw up a hand and braced for the impact.
Which never came.
The driver was swearing, and his hand drooped, the protective shield of the umbrella sagging to the ground and Jamie tried to remember how to breathe.
Five minutes later he was on his way back to his car, soaked and shaken- but he was alright. So he claimed and would continue to claim if anyone asked. The keys dropped from his wet hands and he swore, bending to retrieve them from under his car.
