I think of summer nights, The kind where the heat finally lets go of the day and everything slows down. When the sun slips behind the trees, the sky turns gold, and the whole district seems to breathe easy.

I'd sit on the porch with Lana, cicadas sang louder than we ever could. Somebody down the road would be playing an old fiddle

Every now and then the branches of the orchards would creak, and somewhere overhead a mockingjay would answer with a tune of its own

The air smelled sweet. Fresh peaches, warm earth, smoke curling into the air from a neighbours supper.

Sometimes Mrs. Harlow from three houses over would wave me onto her porch just to ask how my day had been. Mr. Ellis would complain about the weather like it was personally trying to spite him

Kids chased each other barefoot through the dusty streets until somebody's mama called them home before dark.

It wasn't perfect. We were hungry more often than we weren't. The Peacekeepers were never far away. That tall steel fence still circled us.

But it was home.

THG!PJO au 4th Quarter Quell Arena.

They’d chosen the area and stuck to it, the heavy foliage and trees offering cover for them. High up in the leaves, they communicated through whistles and hums—like their own language. The trees were safe. Familiar.

The Capitol changed her. Morphed her into something she wasn’t. Projected this image onto her that was so fundamentally different, it made her skin crawl. They made her into something pretty. Delicate. Desirable.

But they couldn’t erase all of her. Couldn’t erase the scars, or the songs, or the way her silence said more than words. No matter how much you doll her up, that wild girl is still alive underneath.
