S4 E2, Downton Abbey rewatch…

Mary and Isobel perk up when Matthew’s letter/will turns up. Robert isn’t happy to think he might have to relinquish control of the estate (again), and doesn’t even really try to hide it.

Mr. Carson, after telling Mrs. Hughes about Alice: “…but in the end, we all die.”

Mrs. Hughes: “Well, that’s made me feel better.” I LOVE HER 😂

Isobel coming back to life after helping Mr. Grigg and Dr. Clarkson complimenting Mrs. Hughes on knowing that’s what Isobel needed: ✅🤩 WE NEEDED MORE OF THIS

Barrow scheming to get Branthewaite to be O’Brian 2.0 and throwing Anna under the bus in the process: ugh, whyyyy does he persist in being awful, this is why it took me 5 seasons to like him

I think this is the only episode where Mr. Bates is sociable. It’s for a good cause: helping Molesley regain some faith in humanity. Poor Molesley 🥺

Oh, another episode with Edith and Mr. Gregson. I liked them together. Edith had the worst luck!

Tom training Mary about the estate was Granny’s idea, how did I forget that?? At any rate, I love Tom and Mary’s relationship - forged in grief and figuring out how to run things. I’ll ignore Tom later being convinced a certain man is “perfect” for Mary. Cough, cough, that storyline was rushed and shoehorned in because JF neeeeeeded Mary to be in a romantic relationship.

Rose pretending to be a maid in order to go out dancing is actually a believable storyline, as is a fight breaking out over her.

Mrs. Hughes drawing Mr. Carson out about Grigg and encouraging him to let him stitch up his wound and “let it heal”: THEY ARE SO MARRIED, SERIOUSLY. ❤️❤️❤️

Anna helping Rose cover her fake identity is so wholesome. It makes me hate all the more what happens to Anna later. Grrr.

Robert being considerate about Mrs. Patmore being able to do her job well (dinner being served on time) is one of his consistently good qualities.

Mr. Carson appearing out of the steam at the train station is 😘 and I LOVE Mrs. Hughes’s little smile when he appears. Like she’s thinking, “I was expecting him to come, but I’m SO GLAD he changed his mind!” (She said she’s astonished to Mrs. Crawley and Dr. Clarkson.)

And them walking back together is YAAAAY 🥰

Non Downton Abbey comment: I’ve been trapped on the couch most of the episode because Minerva’s laying on me 😊

On today’s random thing to dislike.

Seatbelts that have been in a car that’s been in direct sunlight. The seatbelt burns and it’s mega inconvenient.

On a random thing to like, rear cameras when your car is backing up. While important to look back while reversing, it does help a bit.

Just went grocery shopping with my new shopping buddy and I even got myself a sympathy splinter. 

There's something about having company for grocery shopping that makes it so much more fun? Despite there being this other human who you can interact with, the shared quest for food is a great collaborative expedition. I do like the solitude of going grocery shopping alone, but I guess it doesn't protect you from buying all the bad stuff you know you shouldn't buy, but who (other than the cashier maybe) will even know what you bought? When there is someone by your side you will eventually battle over who spent less and who bought the most healthy stuff. And it's really those victories and losses that let you know you're worth something as a human being, cause you know...you're worth their time.
