Stiles recoils from the torrent of words like he’s been physically slapped. “Go ahead, Derek,” he says lowly. “Say it.”
Derek snaps his mouth shut, but his face still radiates anger, not guilt.
“What were you going to say, huh? That I’m the loser who stayed behind in Beacon Hills? That I’m just some lowly deputy who's working for my dad? A failure who’s still living in his childhood home?"
"You're just jealous of—"
"Ha! You have your head shoved so far up your ass—you're so enamored of your new life—that you actually think I’m jealous of what you have. But you know what? I’m not jealous of you. I pity you. That’s right,” Stiles adds as Derek snorts, “I pity you because you can’t even see how fucked up things are.”
“Or you’re finally seeing who I really am,” Derek says grimly.
Stiles refuses—refuses—to let Derek see him cry. He tips his head up to the sky; feels the pinprick of tears sting his eyes in the bitter cold as he tries to keep them from falling. “You know, I should have realized things would never be normal again between us after that stupid kiss.”
