. countdown to #canada150 . . Today I met Helen. She told me how when they expanded Crowchild Trail, they also built a wall to protect the community from the road. Nobody liked the wall. It was ugly and it blocked the view. And then one day she noticed her neighbour, Bill Morf planting some flowers by the wall. She showed me where. She told me that brought some of her own plants and joined him. Soon others in the neighbourhood started to do the same and that is how the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs was born. . The gardens have expanded dramatically since then to include a labyrinth (replica to the one in Chartes, France), rose gardens, fruit trees, a Shakespeare garden, a memorial forest, art work and more. Schools come here on field trips and it is always busy with dog walkers and families. . She told me that they now have plant experts and hundreds of volunteers from across the city. Each volunteer is assigned to a small section to weed and water. I told her how much I loved visiting and how it is always different each time I come. Something different is always blooming depending on the season. It truly is remarkable how a small community garden as grown into this amazing peaceful oasis of flowers. . She told me Bill passed away a few years ago but I'm glad his wonderful legacy lives on. On my way home, I thought how there are two kinds of people in this world ... those that build walls and those that plant gardens ... 🌻🌼🏵🌻🌼🏵 . So if you plan on visiting, look for a small memorial bench dedicated to Bill. It is near the wall where he first planted the seeds that became this now vibrant garden. You might also find Helen there.
