So, if you don’t mind me asking, Why did you invent dark magic? it seems...harsh.

Harsh? Starling, do you kill mosquitoes and moths? This was how Dark magic began: only using the energy of what would die anyway.

It evolved, later, but my original intention was only to use what was already happening to even the playing field between elves and humans somewhat.
