I think I've mentioned this before, but without spoiling too much, both of them are dead.

Erik's father was killed before he was born and was basically just used for breeding. (no human rights for sirens)

Erik's mother was a human who volunteered for human trials for a large medical company(👀). Things happened and Erik was born and his mother unfortunately died trying to save him from the fate he was born in to.
