The Book of Wisdom, like all the sapiential books of the Old Testament, fundamentally works on the concept of the two mentalities and the two paths. In front of man's reason are foolishness and wisdom, sin and righteousness, and thence the concept of freedom, because man can choose which path to follow, as the Bible explains with wisdom: "God in the beginning created human beings and made them subject to their own free choice" Ben Sira 15:14. And the Book of Wisdom, after exhorting men to love justice, continues its teaching explaining what the perception of life is like according to sinners; and this is important to understand, foolishness is a way of perceiving the world because it is a mentality, a mentality where men look for the immediate, the superficial, what gratifies without caring about others. With these simple words, the Book of Wisdom tells how fools think: "Come, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that are here, and make use of creation with youthful zest. Let us have our fill of costly wine and perfumes, and let no springtime blossom pass us by; let us crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither. Let no meadow be free from our wantonness; everywhere let us leave tokens of our merriment, for this is our portion, and this our lot. Let us oppress the righteous poor; let us neither spare the widow nor revere the aged for hair grown white with time. But let strength be our norm of righteousness; for weakness proves itself useless" Wisdom 2:6-11. The Book of Wisdom shows us that behind this way of reasoning are lies, deception, and suffering; because the path of foolishness and sin is an uncertain path full of destructive unforeseen events due to the ethical laws of the universe. The book of wisdom calls men to avoid this path, and to recognize the fruits that this mentality brings with it.
