PART II
Plutarch Heavensbee was nuts. But when Annabeth had locked eyes with Percy, he knew they couldn’t stand still while the rest of Panem was suffering and dying. In the other hand, they also knew a rebellion couldn’t just start. They needed backup, people who needed to be free just as them. Couples who wanted their kids to have a peaceful childhood without the games, parents who had lost their children in the arena, victors who’d killed someone’s child to survive, brothers and sisters who missed their fallen relatives.
Fifty, forty-nine, forty-eight−
Percy placed his lips on Annabeth’s soft-kissable lips. They were lying down at the beach, Annabeth’s head resting on Percy’s shoulder. The moonlight made her eyes look like silver, tiny shining stars looking straight to his eyes. He felt safe next to her, as if they were inside a big dome, all alone, forever. He wished he could just live that moment the rest of his life. Annabeth looked up to the stars and her eyes just melted all the way with them. Percy smiled.
“What are you thinking, beautiful?” he murmured.
Annabeth sighed “I’m scared”
“Why?”
“I don’t know… I just get this feeling… as if I was somehow preparing myself for−“
Percy frowned “Preparing for what?”
“When you’re gone” she kept her eyes on the stars “I can’t shake that off me”
“Dying is not part of my ‘to do’ list, Wise Girl” he kissed her forehead “The games. We’re going to end that, remember? I’m not coming back. No one will, either. That’s why we’re doing this”
“I know” she looked at Percy’s eyes “Just… hold me, stay close to me, Percy”
“You’re not getting rid of me that easy, Annabeth”
“I really hope so, Seaweed Brain” she half-smiled.
‘I’m worried sick of you being gone’ He’d like to have replied. But instead he sat up, lifted his shirt off and ran towards the ocean. “You coming?” he said.
“We’re breaking like one-thousand rules already” she said pulling her pants off
“Who cares?”
“We should, actually”
“Come get me, Wise Girl” he teased
“No need to be smart to know you’re doomed, you know?” Annabeth said as she dived.
Annabeth reached him fast and grabbed his arm. Her fingers against Percy’s bare skin, warm at the touch, soft and known. Percy held Annabeth’s face and dived deeper into the water. She placed her lips on his and smiled. They kissed.
Forty-seven, forty-six, forty-five−
“Marry me, Annabeth”
She took his hand and kissed the tip of his nose “Yes”
Forty, thirty-nine, thirty-eight−
The 75th Hunger Games came. The Third Quarter Quell. It brought a huge surprise as well.
“On the seventy-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors.”
What happened after Snow’s announcement seemed blurry. Finnick met Percy’s sea green eyes. They were nothing alike, but still felt like brothers. They were both scared and angry. After seeing Annie collapsing, Percy knew he wouldn’t let his brother come back to the arena. The deal was winning the games, you’d get a new house in the Victor’s Village, such as food and money, but most important you’d never come back to the games.
Thirty, twenty-nine, twenty-eight−
He remembered the reaping day. Percy could feel sort of relieve in Four’s air. No one’s child was going to the Hunger Games. Percy was standing next to Finnick in front of the Justice Building. He felt determined of what he was about to do, but when he met Annabeth’s eyes, he hesitated. What if he died?
Annie Cresta. Percy could see Finnick clenching his jaw. But just as they planned, Mags –Finnick and Percy’s mentor− stepped forward. She was in her early eighties, her body was old and her hair was grey. But still, she volunteered. Percy couldn’t tell how much he loved and admired Mags; he felt incredibly miserable of what her fate was determined to be.
Twenty, nineteen, eighteen−
It was the boys’ turn, the woman from the Capitol said. Then, as expected, she picks Finnick Odair’s name out of the glass ball, but Percy puts a hand on Finnick’s chest. They both locked eyes and Percy could see nothing besides the fourteen-year old kid who just won the 65th Hunger Games.
“I volunteer as tribute” Percy managed to say.
Finnick had stared at Percy’s face, his eyes wide opened in shock. He shook his hand and grabbed his little brother’s arm. “No, Perce”
Percy shook Finnick’s arm “You’re not coming back to the arena”
He remembered Mags’ astonished look, but most, he remembered staring at Annabeth’s stormy grey eyes the whole time; she was reluctant to let him go, she wanted him to keep himself alive in the arena, but he’d promised to keep another alive. Mags, Finnick and Percy knew that, whoever was chose to be in the games, they’d keep Peeta Mellark alive. They’d make an alliance with Katniss Everdeen so she’d trust them.
They were in charge of keeping the symbol of the upcoming rebellion alive. Presumably die to keep the Mockingjay away from the Capitol.
Sixteen, fifteen, fourteen−
“Finnick, listen” Percy pleaded “I need you to keep an eye on Annabeth. I have this horrible feeling they’re going to get her sooner or later. No doubt she can protect herself, but she’ll need help”
“I will, I swear” Finnick nodded “Percy, you shouldn’t have volunteered for me I couldn’t stand losing you, couldn’t stand losing my little brother”
Finnick was crying. Percy hated when Finnick cried.
“I couldn’t stand losing my big bro, either” he replied
He did trust Finnick. With his word, Annabeth would be safe, and that was the only way Percy could die serenely.
Twelve, eleven, ten−
“Hello, Katniss”
“Hello, Percy” she faced him “Nice outfit”
"Same, though I prefer the little-girl dresses"
Katniss Everdeen’s grey eyes stared at Percy’s with a strange expression. “Must be awe” he thought. His prep team had decided to use the fewer clothes possible to show Percy’s athletic body to the Capitol’s female crowd –and the rest of Panem, as well−Annabeth would enjoy that. His outfit consisted in Percy draped in a golden net strategically knotted in his groin so he wasn’t completely naked,
“Thanks. Think I can borrow it to you sometime, though you don’t have much of clothes to wear”
“That’s very nice from you, girl on fire” he whistled “but I think my outfit would look quite good on you”
“No doubt”
“Really, I’ll send someone to give it to you though we don’t have sort of a long time… don’t you think?”He whispered “Oh, lovely Peeta comes closer. Very pleased to meet you, Karla”
“Katniss” she corrected
“Yeah, Katniss”
Five, four, three, two, one…
The games begin.
