Tell me the meaning of Punk, Roxyfriend.
I’m tired so you get a joke!
but seriously the thing about Punk is that it’s about individuality, and rejecting a stilted, commodified society. It’s why the constant reference of ‘Punk is dead, and Punk killed it’ became a thing, because Punk became commercialized. When you could go and buy a high-end jacket, and a selection of patches, from the first store you go into?
Well, you can’t call yourself Punk anymore.
Punk WAS always about pursuing your own goals. Not doing what you were told. Being in and of yourself a giant fuck you to society. It’s why it’s always been associated with anarchism, and not the capital A ‘it’ll be order without hierarchies!’ Anarchism which is just communism for people who don’t want to admit they’re communists, but the ‘Drop your trash on the street, throw a fire bomb, fuck your neighbor’ anarchism that is an absolute rejection of society.
Understanding that explains Cyberpunk’s origins, the ‘The future will not be a Star Trek utopia, we’ll be living in the fringes of this ‘perfect’ society of advanced technology’’, and why so many stories are of the theme ‘what makes a person a person’.
And it’s why people get upset when dipshits who have grown up on Green Day claim that they can define what Punk is for everyone else. They grew up ON commodified, commercialized, standardized punk. On punk that is, ITSELF, just another element of society, soft ‘rebellion’ that is just another element of the status quo. Just another arm of a political machine.
Where Rage Against The Machine is selling high priced tickets in big theaters, rather than showing in cheap underground clubs.
