"But you found the variety of human who looks at a grey wolf who could eat him and sees a cute little puppy who would like belly rubs? And as such, decided the mighty goddess of wisdom looked like friendship material?"
– whoever is saying this to Athena just dropped the most accurate assessment of Ody and Tel ever XD
Ah I thought the interpreter on The Pitt looked familiar! He was on This Close—very underrated TV show about a pair of Deaf friends living in LA. He was in the second season, I think, as the hearing brother of one of the protagonists.
I’m rewatching “This Close” a tv show about two Deaf best friends and their lives (that was so unfortunately canceled after two seasons on a fucking cliffhanger) and this scene made me get really emotional. (Sorry for the quality I was in bed and it was late ok?)
As a Deaf person in the world you’re always just kind of known as that Deaf person. The person who uses sign language the person who’s Deaf you’re reduced to that and not much else.
People make assumptions. About your ability to work your intelligence who you are. People are surprised that I have multiple jobs, a college degree, I’m a fucking professor. But people still look down on me and my intelligence level because you are always boiled down to “the Deaf person” especially if you’re not an oral Deaf person and you sign.
But finding a way to make that work for you instead of wallowing in it is the only real way out. Which is why I became super passionate about Deaf education and ASL advocacy and now I teach sign language, Deaf culture, Deaf history and I made it work for me. Because the world won’t help people like us. We have to do it ourselves.
