** Okay SO. This Ending.
This is the single most confusing part of this entire opera. First, is the monk actually Charles V? Is he Charles’ ghost? Is he just a monk who very closely resembles him? Who knows?
Second, the actual ending. The stage direction given here is a) how both main versions of the libretto end it and b) how most productions end it. However, productions have ended a variety of ways, and so it heavily depends on what production you’re watching. Personally, I prefer the original ending, but that’s a whole ‘nother post.
