The lights dim down in the auditorium, and Soul brings his hands up to the piano with long, white, clawed fingers stretching out across the keys. The conductor holds up his baton, and in time with the baton’s movements, he begins to play. The small orchestra erupts into song, and on the stage behind him, he can hear the footsteps of actors making their grand entrance.
Musical practice is in full swing. He tries to remain focused on his playing and the conductor, but once Aldan opens his mouth to speak from center stage, he can’t help but listen in. Everyone pays more attention to the actors than the orchestra pit anyway, it only makes sense that he be interested as well. He can picture Aldan on the stage as his fingers continue up and down the piano keys. Tall, handsome, striped, the zebra is well known and liked amongst the students of the academy. The director would have been a fool not to make him the leading man.
Soul, however, could never stand a chance even if he wanted to walk the stage himself. He’s too lanky, too toothy, too wolf-y to be a likeable lead. Carnivores never get the lead roles, but no one ever questions this decision. Besides, he’s too awkward to play the leading man even if he’d been born an herbivore. He’ll stick to his preferred place amongst the pit, thank you very much.
