This one tonally might not be for everyone tbh but I legit got chills the first time it popped up into my discover weekly lol, the contrast of harsh instrumentals, the angelic humming and the guttural lyrics... its Francis vibes to a 'T' LOL While I don't really relate the actual words in the lyrics that much with him the overall vibe is too perfect! (Save for the end ;^)

I relate it a lot to Sam's personal struggle at both trying to to the right thing as a person and Do the Right Thing™️ as an authority figure. I also relate it a little with him pondering if he's actually a good person or not...in the eyes of God has he done the right thing? It's soft and bittersweet and just perfect...

I’ll admit it, I went off. It’s a long, kinda rambling, rant-ish creature...

So apparently a few Supergirl fans are really against Hoechlin and Sterek fans getting into their show? Which I got so annoyed about that I wrote a whole rant about what I call the circle of fandom. I’ve placed it below the cut. You are in no way obliged to read it. I do go off, and there’s a lot of personal fandom history in there. It might give you a giggle idk.

tl;dr who cares how or why people join your fandom? A bigger fandom is always good for getting more of the source material.

Honestly the Sterek shippers & Hoechlin fans getting interested in Supergirl fandom will give the show a bigger following. Which will keep it airing longer, so they should really be happy for more fans and get over it.

Memes, gifs, references, slash, fandom jokes, etc are the main way I get into new shows.

I literally watched Batman: Under the Red Hood the first time because I saw Jensen Ackles was the voice for Red Hood. I would probably never have done so otherwise because of my Mark-Hamill-as-animated-Joker-snobbery. I later bought it, and I also learned about Jason Todd. I can’t ever feel comfortable taking on the comics. My fandom OCD wants me to read/buy all the things and you pretty much can’t at this point with Marvel and DC. There’s so many reboots and different universes my head would spin trying to take it all in. I’m simply letting myself have a pass on that.

Why did I like Jensen Ackles? Because I got into Supernatural. Why did I watch Supernatural? I had long before decided I was never watching it because horror really freaks me out, and wincest was just not something I was ever gonna touch with a ten-foot-pole. Why then?

I started watching because of Destiel fanfic and a craving for context. Sterek is why I started watching Teen Wolf in the first place. I wanted context. I got into Sterek, Destiel, and Merthur through the slash grapevine. Same with SasuNaru, my first real slash ship when I was a wee fifteen year old with no romantic life to speak of. I got into all their fandoms and source material because of slash.

I got into Young Avengers because I discovered them trawling the wondrous (and slightly terrifying) Marvel Kink Meme, a fantastic slash grapevine. I realized they were characters I could ‘get in on the ground floor’ of, comic ownership and following-wise. I buy all of their comics now, because I love Wiccan and avidly follow all his stories. I know so much about the Marvel Universe just from that tiny slice of the Marvel Universe.

The Marvel Kink Meme is also how I learned about/became a fan of Deadpool. As we all know the X-Men cinematic universe did do a completely shitty job of introducing that character the first time, so bless the Marvel Kink Meme.

I watched Star Trek TOS because I saw the reboot in theaters with friends, then I got into Kirk/Spock and then needed to know all of the context for TOS Kirk/Spock and all the jokes. I love TOS. Now I’m working on TNG.

I started watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer because of Anthony Head, David Boreanaz, and Alyson Hannigan were in it. I hadn’t planned on watching it because as a child I had it confused with the Blair Witch project. Again, strong aversion to horror. Plus I was pretty much over vampires, even before Twilight. I liked those actors because of Merlin, Bones, and How I Met Your Mother.

I got into How I Met Your Mother because of Neil Patrick Harris. I liked Neil Patrick Harris because of Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. I also saw Nathan Fillion for the first time there.

I got into Castle because of Nathan Fillion in Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Firefly. I got into Firefly because my college roommate wrote the Shepherd Book quote about the special place in hell for child molesters and those who talk at the theatre on our shared dry erase board. Once again, I craved context.

I read my absolute favorite book Howl’s Moving Castle and it’s sequels, fantastic and different from the movie, you should read them because I saw the movie of it after I got into Miyazaki films. I only got into those because I received a Castle in The Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away combo-pack as a present from my godfather. At first, I actually just watched Castle in the Sky (over and over) and didn’t bother with the other two for months. I later realized I had already seen Princess Mononoke when I was 9, but I loved it way more when re-watched it when I was older and it seemed less scary and/or overwhelming. Spirited Away was my favorite until How’s Moving Castle. I have a good collection of his films now. Also I read the Howl’s Moving Castle books aloud with my father, the way we read Harry Potter aloud together when I was growing up, it was lovely.

I got into Steven Universe (currently my favorite cartoon, possibly of all time) because of one of Thomas Sanders’s vines that someone posted on tumblr. Before that, I thought it looked dumb/boring since Cartoon Network’s current show advertisement style appeals to me not at all. I’d only been recording Adventure Time on CN. Egregious sins now, but that’s what I’d thought. I also got my best friend into it. She loves it.

I got into my favorite TV show, QI, because I saw gifs of Stephen Fry on the You Know You’re British When tumblr, which I guess I was following because of my love of Black Books, The IT Crowd, Monty Python, and general anglophilia at the time, mostly because of Monty Python. I specifically remember a gif of Fry saying “I think we all agree that nobody in this universe understands QI’s scoring system.” I must have just thought, challenge accepted. I already loved him for many reasons. I think I was originally drawn to him because of his role in V for Vendetta. Also his history with Hugh Laurie who I loved from House. I watched Blackadder because Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie were in it. Also A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Peter’s Friends, and Jeeves and Wooster. I’ve also gotten into many other British Panel shows in general and Doctor Who as a result.

I got into Monty Python because I saw the Spanish Inquisition sketch on youtube. I had a kind of Monty Python reference Tourettes for a while. Monty Python and The Holy Grail is probably my favorite movie. A friend of mine had been into it for a while, but that sketch is what sold me.

I was literally never going to watch Supergirl because, despite the cute gifs of scenes on tumblr, I was initially (still am) annoyed that her outfit included tights and a short skirt. IRL the tights would rip at the drop of a hat for a superhero, and the skirt would just be hiding nothing while she was flying. I think we can do better than that nowadays, and I am always vying for more practical costumes.

Now I’m going to watch the whole show unless I get bored of it or the jump the shark too hard, I’m looking at you Supernatural, go to bed just to see Hoechlin acting more with the context of the show. I do the same for Dylan O’Brien. I started loving them because of Sterek, but now I love them because of their acting skills and who they are. I consider the actors separate from the ship their acting breathed life into, since you know, it’s not a thing on the show anymore.

Plus, this is pretty much confirmation that the TV DCU is completely separate from the Cinematic one, and I am really happy with that. Could I have looked that up? Yes, but I didn’t care to, because I am absolutely obtuse about my fandom selection process. I am completely at peace with that. I even have a fool-proof method of liking the adaptations and the original source material: adaptations first, source material second. It never fails: Watchmen and Howl’s Moving Castle are what primarily made me come to this conclusion.

Is all of this shallow? Yes, probably. However, some arbitrary pickiness keeps me from being overwhelmed by all the fandoms. Why the fuck not? It’s my brain. My fandom memory is like a steel trap, and inevitably these things will cost money in some way. If I want to be arbitrary, shallow, and/or absolutely obtuse about how I get into my fandoms, I will damn well do so. My brain and interests are my fucking domain, I’ll do with them what I like.

It’s the circle of fandom, embrace it.

Tevinter architecture is certainly grand and epic in scale, tending toward the monumental, favoring a somewhat jagged or angular style of sculpture and bas relief, but it is also, as Dorian points out, austere -- restrained in use of color, lacking the frilly fripperies and needless, tacky over-ornamentation of something like the Orlesian style. It relies more upon stark lines and angles and outsized proportions for its imposing effect, not gilding and fussy filigree.

For the most part, we see buildings constructed of pale gold-brown or jet black stone, dark metal, and serpent motif murals done in somewhat muted greens and golds. We’ve not (yet?) seen the Argent Spire in Minrathous, in which the Archon resides, but argent means silver and it seems likely the place would be pale and dark as the rest of Minrathous, a study in sharp contrast and monochrome. 

While generally similar, he buildings in Qarinus, Dorian’s home city, seem to differ slightly from the prevailing Minrathous style. They seem to be made mostly of a paler stone, or perhaps plaster or adobe around wooden frames, with reddish clay tile roofing predominating and at least one dome which might be clad in bronze or copper, given the greenish tint. But the general appearance is very similar to cities in the Mediterranean region, in fact -- with more dragon statues. Generally softer, a little brighter, with domes instead of spires predominating.

Dorian’s own personal style runs toward these austere Tevinter trends, also. Spiky and angular and asymmetric, much of the effect in the proportions and lines of the thing. Pale gold-brown leather, dark, sharp metal, an underlayer of softer velvet in muted greens. The supposed ‘flashiness’ of his outfit is built not out of use of bright, garish color -- which he would eschew -- but in its proportions and carefully calculated details.  

His chambers, however, are somewhat more Qarinus in style than Minrathous, with a corresponding mildness or softness more reminiscent of his childhood home.
