people ask why I love Dan and Phil. it’s because they are real, not put on a pedestal and viewed as perfect, something that so many celebrities are made out to be. don’t get me wrong, I do think that they’re perfect. they’re perfect because they share their flaws, insecurities, fears, and silliness with the world. but perfect is a flawed word, no one is perfect, it’s a word given to things that society holds at a higher standard, a word to describe something that we idolize. Dan and Phil give me joy on days where even the idea of smiling is unthinkable. they make me happy. isn’t that the main personal goal? to be happy? they help me with my anxiety, show me everything is okay and that I will be okay, that it’s alright to be myself and not to care what people think of me. I am really shy and quiet, always have been and always will be. I can count my closest friends on one hand, people who I trust to some degree, people who I feel safe with, and Dan and Phil are two of them. they are the only people in my life who can make me smile by just looking at them, make me laugh when I’m not feeling myself, and make me feel better after the cruel comments I hear at school. I rely on them to make my day a little more special even if it’s just by watching one of their videos for the hundredth time. I relate to their problems. I admire their ability to share their lives with the internet. I envy their friendship and the level of comfort they have with being themselves. okay, so I idolize them, sue me, get annoyed when I bring them up in conversation repeatedly, I don’t care. but can’t you see how happy they make me? don’t you see how my face lights up whenever I mention them…or think about them? see the smile I get when I see a new tweet or that a video was just uploaded? why would you roll your eyes at me, don’t you want be to be perky? you always criticize me for being sad and not fun to be with, so why can’t you see that they’re the only ones who make me feel accepted, the only people who I am able to genuinely laugh with? so, yes, I do look up to them and idolize who they are, how they make me feel about myself, how they are able to change lives.
