Edit: No, this is not biphobia. I am Bi. Yes, being Bi and in a relationship with the opposite gender is not any less valid than being in one with the same gender. That's not the point of this.

The point is that Marvel pulled a JK Rowling (yes, I went there) and had their characters state they were bi for inclusion points. So far in the MCU, Loki and Sylvie are the only LGBTQA represention we have. Stating something isn't representation. It's a cheap cop out to keep the homophobic viewers.

It's an easy way to say you're progressive, without needing to put in the effort.

Destiel is not canon and the writers aren't and have never been writing a secret love story.

More movies, more problems...

Caught up on another couple of big releases tonight: Tomorrowland and Home.

Tomorrowland

Pros: Not one but two young female leads. One is incredibly smart & works out how to save the world, the other self-sacrifices twice to help this happen, and her demise is not simply motivation for any other characters.

Cons: The female leads mentioned above are both white; the other two main leads are middle-aged white males, there’s also two other minor white male characters, and a white mother that’s only seen briefly in flashback & somehow absent for the rest of the picture without ever being described as dead (but she totally is.) Despite this, it wears its self-assumed diversity as a badge of honour, without actually being diverse - there’s lots of shots of POC with no names or real involvement in the story; the most glaring example is the Indian astronaut that goes off to join her crew of 8-10 mixed gender individuals but no other one of them is non-white.

Verdict: Enjoyable, if a little “in your face” with its message. Unsurprising that it tanked.

Pros: WOC lead. WOC minor character. Did I mention WOC lead?

Cons: Two white guys voicing the lead aliens. Pathetic "poor English” gimmick that feels like it’s mocking AAVE or other similar speech patterns. Plot right out of the 60s - seriously, the Gorg is/are the Horta from Star Trek. Music will date it terribly; why do Dreamworks keep doing this in their movies?!

Verdict: Despite wishing to support diversity, I’m glad I didn’t go & see this one on the big screen; I almost turned it off before the opening credits had even started...

Can we all just acknowledge that “Ok, it never said so in the book, but the author said this character was gay one time in an interview 6 months after the book was published” is NOT the pinnacle of minority media representation.

In fact, it is so lack luster, it’s actually pretty fucking pathetic.
