This line was stuck in my head today. I was thinking about how sometimes it seems people love defining someone by the worst thing they've ever done. In contrast, the absolute insistence from Lord Goring that one mistake does not define his friend's character. He never abandons Robert Chiltern, he never stops defending him, and he's right! Robert does not bow to blackmail in the end and give up on his principals, because he is a good man. Because this was his worst mistake and he'll never fall that far again. Because he learned and grew and felt real guilt over what he'd done.

The real Robert Chiltern isn't the worst thing he's ever done. That is an outlier. Lord Goring can measure that one indiscretion against years of observed good. He always knew the truth.

Context: Robert is a Member of Parliament who sold a government secret for the purposes of insider trading when he was young and relatively poor. He is being blackmailed into doing something similar many years later.
