Its healthy to have a love affair with your bike, right? She is beautiful. She is pink. I love her. She’s like my love child. She is also accountable for the sheer pain my body goes through when I am pounding out km after km each week. The reason I winch when I sit to go take a pee, as my ass has been sat on the saddle for hours on end. That burning sensation in my quads I get when I am pushing myself harder and harder. The fiery furnace in my lungs as I go faster and faster, every breath I take getting hotter and hotter. The feeling of my skin drenched in sweat. Sweating from places I never knew you could sweat from until you’ve been on that hard and fast ride. The fact during a single ride can I can experience a whole raft of emotions from mild hysteria and uncontrlable laughter to sobbing and wanting to give up and sacking it all off in my next breath. The unsuspecting family of flies that I always seem to ingest when I am out cycling (Not good for us vegans). The wind blowing through my hair. The dodgy tan lines. The idyllic sceneries. Those bastard hills that vanish into the horizon and never seem to end causing ne to curse and moan. The innocently looking inclines that, if you haven’t go the momentum from the offset, it causes you to ride back to the bottom and start again. As you just can’t get the rhythm going wearing cleats. That claggy after taste in your mouth from knocking back bottles of SiS along the way. The headwinds that take your breath away, but leave you feeling exhilarated. The hail that beats against your face slowly exfoliating your epidermis along the way. The rain that seeps through to your bones. The sunshine making you profusely sweat.
