I would never have called myself a mechanic, but in recent months I've found myself using the term more and more, in the sense that a mechanic is someone who knows how to work on vehicles, even in the most basic sense. I haven't quite earned the term yet, but I'm getting there.

But even having acquired the knowledge I have always found myself bound by a lack of strength. Even if my head could tell me what to do my bad back and weak arms restricted me in my abilities.

So I started using my legs. Ridiculous as this might sound to a real mechanic, and even Ben who just thought I was "messing around", my legs have ten times the power that my arms do. And so using my feet to kick a spanner around a tight bolt, or to undo wheel nuts by jumping up and down on a breaker bar, I feel is a valuable skill made possible with a slightly alternative approach.

After all, is our greatest asset as human beings not out adaptability, and our ability to utilise tools?

I will not allow my woman's body to restrict me from the world of mechanics, or building, or any other thing I set my mind to. And I hope that by writing about my somewhat ludicrous techniques that I can make other women question the boundaries of their skills, and encourage them to try something that they too thought was beyond their abilities.

P. S. I know #InternationalWomensDay was last week, but women should be celebrated every day. This is the second radiator I've ever changed now, and my face in this photo is pretty proud.

We had plans to climb that 600 foot tall rock feature today... but as you can see that isn't happening. . Who would've expected snow in the very most southern bits of Arizona, nearly hugging Mexico's border? . Surely not us. . If you're going to embark on a life filled with adventure you'll quickly learn a few things: you'll need to be flexible and patient. Shit breaks and you end up in the middle of Nevada off "the loneliest highway in America" for a few days. Or you head up to summit Mount Russell (a 14,000 foot peak) and the 80-degree heat at 13k forces you to retreat from your objective. Or you make it to Moab for one glorious 60-degree day before the weather plummets to freezing, and your water pipes do what you feel like doing and burst (😭). Or, you wake up and yesterday's incredible weather turned into a beautiful snowscape. . You'll have to learn when to call it. In a way, this photo embodies everything we love about vanlife; simplicity, minimalism, everyday tasks which turn into adventures. 

Driving through cute little villages with ancient churches, weaving through rural farms and green green fields, searching for a place to fill up our water. I admit I enjoyed these hand pumps a little too much, but they reminded me of a simpler time, a less complicated way of living, the unconventional and free-spirited bohemian lifestyle that has its very roots set in the Czech Republic.

And this is how we felt in this beautiful country; free to explore, free to camp wherever we chose to lay our heads, free to roam under the canopy of golden autumn leaves that fell and glimmered in low morning sunlight. We had entered a land of fairytale castles, vast forested landscapes and rich traditions. We drank beer and ate pumpkin soup with friends old and new, and got closer to nature than ever before, living, if only for a short while, among the deer and boar.

The Czech Republic lives fondly in our memories in perpetual autumn just as we experienced it, beckoning us back with a promise of mythical lands, boundless wilderness, uncharted forest tracks and free-spirited bohemian culture.
