Is it possible this moment is the perfect blend you need for happiness?
This morning I woke up at 7:30am, grabbed my computer, and headed to the closest coffee shop with my hubby. The main purpose of this was for him to get some homework done, but since I am no longer in school (heeyyyy), I could fill up these hours with whatever I wanted. It is SO silly but whenever I am faced with free time and nothing that 'needs' to get done, I get overwhelmed and freeze up when deciding what to focus on. Anyone else experience that?
In the middle of running through my list of possibilities of what to do, I decided to open up my email. Immediately I saw a post by Leo Babauta that I had been meaning to read the past few days. It is called The Realization, read it here. In this post Babauta asks; "What if this moment were already perfect, everything you needed to be happy?" I am glad I hadn't had time to read the post earlier. This was exactly the question I needed to ask myself this morning.
I have been on vacation in Colorado visiting my in-laws the past few days and we fly home tonight. I do this terrible thing on the last day of vacation where I spend most of my energy focusing on the fact that I have to leave tonight and start work tomorrow. As you can imagine, this makes it hard to enjoy anything that happens on my last day of vacation.
What if instead of focusing on my flight later, I enjoy the green tea I am sipping on and this new coffee shop I've never been to? What if instead of focusing on the possibility that I might be tired at work tomorrow, I enjoy the amazing blue sky and fall colors that Colorado has on display? What if instead of thinking about anything outside of what is happening right now, I focused my energy on just being?
I know from past experience that the answer to all those questions is that I and those around me will be much happier. When I focus on the now, and challenge myself to really think about this moment being perfect and holding everything I need to be happy, the moment really becomes perfect.
Being present in this moment allows me to notice the smiles of those around me more, to really hear what they are saying, to notice the ridiculously bright color of the sky and the warmth of the sun, to truly accept that this moment is exactly what I need and that it needs me to experience it.
So today I challenge you to be present. It's not easy and it will take practice. Don't get mad if it's hard and your mind constantly wanders. Notice the thoughts that pass through your head but don't take it further than that. Give thoughts of planning for the future or fretting about the past no more energy than I nod of recognition. Then let me know what is different about your day when you allow yourself to just be.
