Chinese New Year!

In China, the lunar New Year is known as the Spring Festival. Pictured here is a steel-plate engraving entitled “Ceremony of ‘Meeting the Spring’” byThomas Allom from the 1843, four-volume memoir China, in a Series of Views, Displaying the Scenery, Architecture and Social Habits, of that Ancient Empire, by Allom and George Newenham Wright.

This set features historical and descriptive notices, written by Rev. G. N. Wright, an Irish writer and clergyman noted for authoring books on geographical subjects, accompanied by steel engravings produced from drawings and watercolors by Thomas Allom, a London-based architect and illustrator. Allom was well-travelled and contributed numerous illustrations to different topographical publications throughout the 1830s and 1840s, especially travel books on Asia Minor.  His Chinese illustrations are based on his own travels through China, as well as images from earlier works on China. The prints express a sense of the picturesque, and the play of light and shadow make them look like theatrical scenarios.

La Caffetteria Ottomana di Thomas Allom: un viaggio nel tempo

L’illustrazione che vedete è una testimonianza preziosa della vita quotidiana a Istanbul nel XIX secolo. Realizzata dal celebre pittore e architetto inglese Thomas Allom, l'opera è tratta dal suo volume "Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor" (1838).

Questo dipinto è storicamente significativo perché immortala le atmosfere della città poco prima delle grandi riforme (Tanzimat) avviate dal sultano Mahmud II. Osservando i dettagli, si nota il passaggio epocale nei costumi, come il progressivo abbandono del turbante in favore del fez.

Curiosità: il caffè, luogo di dibattito e storie

Le caffetterie ottomane non erano solo luoghi di ristoro, ma veri e propri centri nevralgici della vita sociale:

☕ Spazi di "libertà": Spesso temuti dal potere centrale, i caffè erano luoghi di dibattito politico dove le notizie correvano veloci, tanto che alcuni sultani tentarono periodicamente di chiuderli.

📖 Caffè-Teatro: In molte caffetterie si riunivano i cantastorie (meddah) che narravano poemi epici, fiabe o storie di avventure, rendendo il caffè uno spazio di intrattenimento culturale collettivo prima dell'avvento della stampa e della radio.

Nel 2013, il valore di questo rito è stato consacrato a livello mondiale: il caffè turco è stato ufficialmente riconosciuto come Patrimonio dell'Umanità dall'UNESCO.
