You won the fight already, surely that's enough?
Chapter 2 - Horseshoe Overlook
just replayed the Thomas downes mission in my second play through of rdr2 and…just wow. Watching it back, knowing how it ends is just crazy. Like the amount of weight put on it—you can’t cancel the mission, you get a riding cutscene after where Arthur wipes the blood from his face—is so much more obvious once you understand what’s just happened and how much Arthur’s life has been changed
Chapter 3 time
saddest death
Hamish (Killed by either Arthur or Sean)
Thomas downes (Tuberculosis)
Sean (Headshot)
Sheriff Gray (Shot by Arthur)
Catherine Braithwaite (Burned)
Bartholomew Braithwaite (Shot by Dutch)
Third play through of rdr 2 and just realized the dude that stopped Arthur from beating Tommy up is literally Thomas Downes....
This game and their details man
Concept: Arthur Morgan is the protagonist of RDR1, John Marston is the protagonist of RDR2
Arthur Morgan is a former outlaw who has been blackmailed by the government into capturing his former gangmembers. Whenever someone asks him what he’s being blackmailed with, Arthur says that the government is holding people who are close to him hostage. When Arthur is asked if those people are his family, Arthur says no and doesn’t elaborate any further.
It’s only when he meets Landon Ricketts that he reveals why these people are important to him. The people - Abigail and Jack Marston - are the family of one of his former gangmembers, John Marston. Arthur says that John is dead and that before he passed, John made Arthur promise to him that he’ll take care of his family. When Landon asks Arthur why John is so important to him, Arthur says that John saved his life.
After Dutch dies, Arthur reconnects with Abigail and Jack. He says that now that they’ve been released, he should be moving on. Abigail says he’s earned the right to live on the farm, but Arthur replies that he needs to find his own way. He also says that he needs to stay as far away as possible from the Marstons since it was because of him that the government had taken them captive.
The reunion doesn’t last long. Edgar Ross leads an assault on the ranch to kill Arthur. Arthur, realizing that the government won’t stop until he’s dead, sacrifices himself in order to ensure that Abigail and Jack get to live normal lives.
Several years later, Jack Marston avenges “Uncle Arthur” by killing Edgar Ross. By calling him Uncle Arthur, Jack confirms that he saw Arthur as family (this is the payoff to Arthur saying the Marstons weren’t his family).
In RDR2, we are now in the role of John Marston, the man who saved Arthur Morgan’s life. John, who we only knew from Arthur’s story, is revealed to be a hotheaded brute who is trying to care for his wife and son. As the “younger brother” of the group, he frequently butts heads with the older gang members, namely Dutch and Arthur.
During one of the early missions, John Marston is sent to shake down a man named Thomas Downes. He ends up contracting tuberculosis when Thomas coughs blood in John’s face.
It’s because of the tuberculosis diagnosis that John starts to mature and change. Before, he was taking Abigail and Jack for granted, feeling that they weren’t going anywhere since they needed the gang to survive. Now that he knows he’s dying, John realizes that he wasted so many years not paying enough attention to his family. He begins making plans to leave the gang and set up his family somewhere, so even after he dies, they’ll be well taken care of.
John Marston learns about Beecher’s Hope and asks Arthur Morgan if it was a good idea to buy the land for his family. Arthur says that he’s being crazy for even thinking about wanting to leave the gang. Sometime later, John proposes to Abigail. The two get married with the gang in attendance.
Cut to the downfall of the gang. Arthur Morgan exposes Micah Bell as the snitch and John Marston backs him up. Unfortunately, Dutch van der Linde sides with Micah, leading to a massive shootout. John and Arthur make their escape, but John realizes he’s reached the end of the road due to his TB.
John tells Arthur that he’ll stay behind and hold off the enemy forces. When Arthur tries to convince John to keep running, John gives Arthur his hat and tells him to care for Abigail and Jack. Arthur promises that he’ll do that before running to safety.
Several years later, Arthur is still with Abigail and Jack. Although he’s trying his best to leave the outlaw life, Arthur keeps getting involved in dangerous situations. This eventually leads to Abigail and Jack leaving him. Even though Arthur thinks to himself that they aren’t even his family, Arthur is then reminded of the promise he made to John. That he’ll take care of Abigail and Jack.
That’s when he remembers what John told him years ago. Arthur purchases Beecher’s Hope and builds a ranch for the Marstons. Abigail and Jack return and Abigail forgives Arthur.
Sadie Adler arrives and tells Arthur that Micah Bell is in the area. Arthur, along with Charles Smith, goes with her to avenge John. When Abigail begs him not to go, Arthur says that he wouldn’t even be here if it weren’t for John. Although he knows that revenge is a fool’s game, he justifies going after Micah Bell as “justice”. Arthur confronts Micah and, with the help of Dutch, kills him.
Before Dutch leaves, Arthur tries to convince him one more time that their time has passed. Dutch doesn’t answer (this also sets up their final encounter in which Dutch jumps off the cliff).
Arthur returns to Beecher’s Hope. He asks if he can stay on the ranch as a farmhand, which Abigail agrees to. Unbeknownst to him, Edgar Ross has tracked him down, leading into the events of the 1st game.
