War is never lenient but where it is wanton; where men are compelled to fight in self-defence, they must hate and avenge. This may be bad, but it is human nature; it is the clay as it came from the hands of the Potter.
- Thomas B. Macaulay
The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Prefiero ser un hombre pobre en un desván con un montón de libros que un rey que no ama la lectura

"Reform so that you may preserve." -Thomas Macaulay If that doesn't summarize the upper class's attitude towards social democratic concessions into a digestible soundbite, I don't know what else could do it better. Reform is meant to preserve the system as it exists now, which is why "democratic socialism" (which seeks to reform the capitalist economy to eventual socialism) is a dead-end that will inevitably be co-opted and defanged by those with power. Reform needn't always be the enemy of the revolutionary, but when the chips are down and the material conditions are ripe, we absolutely need to embrace social revolution over social reform. At the crossroads, we'll need to choose socialism over barbarism.
