OK, CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS SCENE THOUGH!?
So when Anne is talking to Marian about Thomas Sowden, I don’t think it’s entirely about him. She says this to Marian:
I think she’s also talking about Ann Walker (and maybe even John Abbott).
In episode 1 of the season, when Anne decides she wants to pursue Ann (before she falls HARD), she mentions that what Ann lacks in rank, she makes up for in fortune. Anne was a snob, and she cared very much about her high position in society. I do think that initially she felt that Ann walker was beneath her socially. Since then, she has fallen in love with her and feels that rank is maybe not as important as she once felt it was.
Also, I think she’s expressing to Marian that her disdain for John Abbott was not entirely to do with his rank, but really because she didn’t believe him to be a good match for her.
I think you can even see an understanding between the sisters that they’re not just referring to Thomas Sowden.
This scene needs more credit. So powerful. So much meaning and depth!
