Beatrice came to visit Arthur at school, and they both decided that they would introduce each other to some friends of theirs. Arthur brought his friend Thomas, who was just as passionate a political activist as his sister. To Arthur’s surprise, Bea’s friend Mary turned out to be “Scarlett”, the dancer from the club!

Thomas and Beatrice were getting along very well, while Arthur could barely believe he was finally speaking to the woman he had watched perform for weeks. Once the others were out of earshot, Mary told him she was rather flattered by how often he came to see her. She explained that she had always wanted to be an opera singer, but her family could never afford lessons. But she found she loved performing in the club, where she can sing and dance, and feel liberated- although she would never tell her friends or family where she works. Arthur vowed that he would keep her secret for as long as he lives.
