In the spring of 1445, a lot of change swept through the fractured home of the Thorneblades. After many awkward and difficult nights of intimacy with one another, the fruit of their burden finally arrived; Jane was with child!
Yet with such moments of relief also come times of uncertainty. The call for battle came in just a few weeks later, when Henfordshire’s lord liege, young Viscount Henry II, called for all able bodied men to rise his banners for the 100 Years War.
Jane herself couldn’t put into words how she entirely felt about the situation. Here she was, pregnant, with both of the men in her household off to fight in war. Lowe, the baker, was sure to be able to withstand the tests of war, but her husband?
“Lowe asks of you to keep the bakery running until his return,” Wymond fidgeted where he stood. Sweat began to bead across his forehead as he spoke. There was no doubt that the idea of warfare gave him unruly anxiety. “I hope this isn’t too much of a burden for you to take on.”
“Nonsense, I will manage.”
Wymond gave his wife a curt nod. The next words that he spoke came out with a hard swallow and a short inhale, “When—if I return…” he trailed off, eyes wandering elsewhere, as if speaking whatever was on his mind into existence was worse than the trials to come.
Yet Jane seemingly understood what he could not say, and cut him off from speaking further. “When you return, you will be a father. When you return, we will have our last babe, and then we will never have to be in such close proximity to one another again.”
Jane could see the shock on his face, and the disappointment. In an odd way, it struck a cord right throughout her body, a shattering realization that she was coming more closer to the reality of her life; she was married to a man who didn’t love her and would rather be in the arms of a man. He did not want her, or the babe inside of her.
“Yes, I—that’s good… news. Then I shall… f-fight to return to you both. Goodbye, wife.”
No words came to her mouth as a response, for what words there were to say? Did she wish the safe return of her husband, or even his lover? Before the words could even begin to be thought, Wymond gave his wife a curt nod, quickly spun on his heel and began the long journey to the King’s Fort.

Jane had been missing for hours. No one in the village had heard a peep nor whisper of where the woman had gone. So it came as a stark shock when Wymond strode into the bakery's common room to find Jane, perfectly settled upon a wooden stool by the cold hearth.
He opened his mouth to question where she'd been—to demand an accounting of her absence—before his wife cut him off, her voice a flat, steady stone.
“I know the shameful business you've had with the baker, and I saw it with my own eyes. Don't deny a thing.” The chilling calm in her voice did not fit the fire in the room. Wymond’s heart thundered in his chest, awaiting the next strike.
“It's plain you chose me for your wife only to stop wagging tongues and save your own worth. I know your truth, and I'll not tell it—but I demand a payment.”
Crossing his arms tight over his chest, as if to shield his very bones from her words, Wymond muttered, “Name it.”
Jane’s eyes did not waver. “Now hear this: I want two babes of my own. You and that baker can keep to your secret sweetness, but keep it far from my sight and my children's eyes. You will not steal my chance to have a family.”
Seeing no other path that didn't lead to ruin, Wymond swallowed the bitter taste and simply nodded his agreement. He turned and left his wife alone in the shadows of the empty common room.

The months of her pregnancy flew by in a daze. Jane wasn't sure if it were her newfound powerful, yet albeit still growing, magical prowess that made the majority of the days bearable or not. Whichever the case may be, before she knew it, she was waking up in the early hours of the morning when she felt the first stirrings of birth.
It all happened much too fast. She was supposed to have Wymond's sister, Elenwen, accompany and aid her. Elenwen had two children already, and both births went as smoothly as ever. Yet as Jane struggled to even get out of the bedroom, she knew that her babe was coming, and quickly.
It only took a few deep breaths from the young mother before the first cries of her child were heard in the air. Much to her relief, the baby was a boy. After getting him cleaned up and wrapped in warm clothing, Jane bestowed the name Everard to her son - the name of her grandfather.
Though there was still much to worry and be anxious over, Jane allowed herself a moment of reprieve to enjoy the beauties of her newest creation.

It had been months at the King's fort, under a strict and rigid training regime.
Wymond had the honor of being placed within the same camp as of that of the King himself. Lowe saw it as a great and wonderous responsibility placed upon them. Wymond didn't agree.
The training was something Lowe looked forward to. To build himself up to fight for his King. He trained daily, sometimes past nightfall.
While Wymond was just glad the food was decent.
