Weird illustration for a weird fairy-tale I wrote for a culture and language I invented — Thorsh. Aa (Á) is a monster that lives in the oceans surrounding the ancient island country Thorn (Þórn). It is said she built a tower that is miles from shore in the icy waters, where she holds hostage the people she plans to eat. Aa can change shape, but can in no way step foot on land. She is either the odd mishmash living in the sea, or a large flying dragon. She is most powerful in the waters, as with flying she needs rest, and she is momentarily destroyed if she lands on earth. It takes at least a century for her to regenerate after a death. With each regeneration she is more and more gruesome looking. It is rumoured that Aa was once a form of prehistoric Larla (similar to a Siren) — immensely beautiful. But after falling in love with the great King Valorne, she was never the same.
"Aa the Sea Monster"
For ten days and ten nights the sun and moons pass the single window of the young maiden Salk. Little Salk cries and cries for her prince. Days turn to nights. Nights turn to days. She is alone.
Around the tower erupts a loud and terrifying sound. It is Aa. Aa – monster from the seas, terror of the dark, a cannibal. Aa is a giant.
Aa's wirey clawed fingers soar into the window, plucking Salk out by her hair.
Young Salk cries: "Do not eat me, Aa! I am distasteful! I am thin and weak! Please, wait for my prince!"
Aa looks at the girl with her own large, round cloudy eye. She asks of Salk: "Why should I await this prince of yours?"
"He has more meat on his bones. He is twice my size."
