This scene in Though Love, following their scene in Intervention, was so intrinsically connected to Spike being ready to sacrifice himself to protect Dawn from Glory one episode prior.
He couldn’t stand the idea of seeing Buffy (the person he loves) in pain, and he connects with Willow from that point of view. In a subtle way, it reminds Buffy that only love can make you act this way, and I think it cemented something between them after the events of the previous episode.
