things
Chance encounters with everyday useless things often surprise me by the suddenness with which they seem to assert their presence and power. Familiar forms seem unpredictable and inexplicable. The ‘essence’ of objects evades linguistic articulation.
If sculpture is the ‘materialisation of thought, emotions and drives’ its role in the increasing immaterialisation of contemporary society is heightened. The abstract forms of my work aim to link into this unconscious aspect of our perception.
‘Thing One and Thing Two and…’ consists of ‘things’ made from redundant materials that I encounter in the everyday - scrim, sellotape, sticks, wooden knives, redundant tools, cable ties, dusters- all have their place. Their material properties determine their eventual form.
