Okay so, I have a question for all the seamstresses/seamsters out there:

I was just recently gifted the Singer 9960 for Christmas (Thanks Mom and Paul!) and I’m reading through the manual because well, I was really excited about getting this sewing machine but it’s more than just a bit overwhelming, and I’ve come across the part in the manual where they talk about adjusting the tension.

Now, the reason I wanted a new sewing machine in the first place was because my old sewing machine, you had to adjust the tension manually and I just couldn’t get the hang of it and it resulted in me not using the machine hardly at all. So when I was browsing for the new sewing machine my #1 must have was automatic thread tension, which the 9960 does.

My question is, since the machine automatically adjusts thread tension when a stitch pattern is selected, there shouldn't be any reason for me to futz with it, should there?

I know diddily squat about thread tension and what exactly you’re supposed to do with it. If someone could shed a little bit of light on this for me, I would really super appreciate it!

Sewing Machine Lockstitch

Don't you hate it, when you are in the middle of sewing something and the thread tension goes on the fritz again?

I had this happen so often when switching fabrics that I started keeping separate bobbins with cases and their adjusted tension at hand, when I was working on a collection of clothing. Not that this always worked out perfectly, but often it helped by switching the bobbin set when I repeatedly had to change back and forth between different kinds of fabrics during the week.

What made me think of this were these gif/animations of sewing machine lockstitch examples, seen below. We can't exactly observe how the machine stitching loops around, etc...and I always like animations anyway. :-)

Correct and the infamous incorrect tension...and yet it can look much worse than on this photo!  Arrrgh!

Why can't there be a perfect and simple solution to this problem? We need a "Thread Tension Fairy", we can call upon, every time we come close to tossing the sewing machine out the window...
