Cherokee Rivercane purse - Artist unknown
This purse or "shopper" basket was made from rivercane. Although its maker is not known, the form, material, technique, and pattern are typical of Cherokee basketry made between the 1920s and the present.
The dark brown color is probably from walnut hulls and the orange from bloodroot, both dyes common to Cherokee makers. The pattern woven into the basket is the Chief's Heart pattern. The drop handles are made from wood separate from the basket. The handle attachments are woven into the basket before the rim is attached.
“a little Cherokee in me”
This self portrait was the result of my wanting to do a piece on the phrase 'i have a little Cherokee in me,' as both a critique of blood quantum and of the type of people who say those types of things. These people aren't interested in actually connecting with Cherokee community, learning our history or language or art, they just want a fun fact to share to make them look more interesting. I've been reconnecting for a couple years now, working to learn as much as I can of our language and culture, and connect as much as possible to community, which is what it means to be actually Cherokee.

So my nation (ᏣᎳᎩᏱ ᏕᏣᏓᏂᎸᎩ) has this thing where they will put bear statues up and get local artist to paint them and it's one of my favorite things
Deer Woman 🦌🩸
It’s been a while since I’ve made any personal artwork.
today i received my ancestral markings/inchunwa/ᏓᏆᏙᏪᎸ. i am so so happy with how they turned out. they feel like they were always there and just waiting to be uncovered. i feel honored to have had kii johnson (@/hodokiijohnson on insta) as the practitioner who gave me my markings. we had a beautiful day together, along with a couple of friends. (shoutout to ashely and penguin at mothership tattoo in auburn ca (@/mothership.tattoo on insta) for providing a wonderful atmosphere and taking these photos!) it was honestly perfect.
i made these custom vans and a matching lighter case to gift them. these markings are absolutely priceless and so precious to me. i am so incredibly proud and excited for this new chapter of my life, wearing my commitment to my community and culture front and center every day, and to be a part of the indigenous southeastern tattoo revivalization movement.
