Support Group was going to be bleak. Jackson hadn't attended this specific one before, but he just knew instinctively that it would be, just judging by the few others he had gone to in the past. He didn't need to be reminded about how osteogenic sarcoma had taken away one of the most important things in his life: lacrosse, via his lower leg. He was painfully aware of that.
So it was a surprise that Danny had talked him into going. Maybe it was because Danny was his best friend. But maybe it was because Danny's eye situation was getting worse. Either way, there he was, sitting in what an episcopalian crucifix-shaped church with a bunch of other sick kids in various stages of dying.
He sat on the edge of his undersized chair, tapping his foot absentmindedly, just waiting for something to happen. He nodded every once in a while to Danny, who was in the middle of telling him about something uninteresting that happened with him and his boyfriend. But his attention was quickly drawn away from Danny and to a girl who had just entered the room.
She was beautiful, he thought, in an unconventionally conventional kind of way. Honestly, he just couldn't stop staring.
