The Starcourt Mall was, in a word, spectacular. And in another word? Overwhelming—particularly for a demon such as Mimic. The lights shone brightly, beckoning. Food smells permeated the entire facility, drifting out far from the food court. Shops welcomed customers with clothes and items and toys and so many amazing things to buy.
And the people! Oh, the people most of all drew Mim’s attention. She was enraptured by the men, women, and children that visited the place. Honestly, she could people-watch all day, every day—but hunger drove her to move about the food court and the many food shops there and elsewhere.
There was just so much to see, to take in.
Of them all, she liked the ice cream shop the best. It had ice cream, a funny name, and a fascinating girl who worked there.
Yes, Mim had watched her too, catching her eye a time or two, but never approached her or engaged in conversation. She never wore her other faces when she came to the Starcourt Mall, so she could never speak in anything other than smiles, sign language, and pantomime. It made conversation difficult and left her self-conscious, so she contented herself to just watch and smile and sit in booths. She never ordered anything as she rarely had money, but it was nice just to be there, to smell the delicious smells, enjoy the ambiance, the people, and the girl’s smiles.
Today though, she cut her people-watching short because she had money.. and a bit of courage. She waited back behind a couple who received their cones with many thanks. With a few bills clutched in one hand and the other sweeping aside blond curls from her eyes, she smiled tentatively and eyed the selection of ice creams. Mim kept her distance, uncertainty holding her back.
