"I know a monster when I see one." -for Mimic from Rowan
Criminal Sentences, Vol. 33 // @gentle-hearted

Her heart kicked against her ribs. She couldn't breathe—tiny gasps with hardly a sound. She could smell her own fear.
Run. Run. Hide.
But her feet refused to move, though her thoughts rushed. Oh, she'd done something wrong, gone somewhere she shouldn't. Monster? He thought she was a monster? That's what the hunters had called demons, and vampires, and wolves and Others. Was he—?
Mim wasn't a monster. No!
She shook her head, blonde curls falling into her face. Her foot slid back.
Six year old Chaska slowly creeped passed his two uncles Bonely and Salem. He should be sleeping but he was too round up. He smiles when grabes a potion.
Stan had only gotten up to get himself a soda from the fridge when he spotted Journey’s youngster reaching up for one of Salem’s healing vials.
“Ah, that is not fer you,” the pawnbroker said and pulled the bottle from the youngster’s grasp as he scooped the kid into his arms. “’N’ yer supposed teh be in bed, it’s way passed yer bed time.”
Not that Bonely minded. He’d signed up for watching Chaska while Journey either rested or got caught up on her schoolwork. Poor girl needed a break and Bonely was more than apt to help her with that.
In the world of TrollHunters, Owl’s jumping magic has transformed him into the closest thing to him - a changeling. Human professor of archaeology by day, and by night, a winged troll with a penchant for puzzle solving, rune reading, and item enchanting. He also has a keen knowledge of arcane magic which curiously enough, is not troll affiliated.
Presently he works with the Janus Order to avoid suspicion (as being an unaffiliated changeling would bring), which combined with his chosen career, allows him to investigate ancient sites for magical artifacts that would prove useful to himself and his colleagues.
One such artifact, the Maker’s Mask, is one he would sooner destroy if he could, as it is an artifact he crafted specifically to contain and his Näota magic, thus temporarily freeing him from its influence. Granted it contains part of his soul and has numerous legends of mask making and hero forging behind it, and would thus be a prized if not irreplaceable tool to those who can bear to use it.
Fortunately, not many can withstand the sensation of being torn from one’s body and soul. However, Owl knows that if he can’t keep the mask from being found, the secret to it will eventually get loose and he’ll have an entirely new and nasty can of worms and consequences to deal with.

Some thank yous and words from the author below the cut:
I just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who stuck with me on this, readers and friends alike--some starting as the former and becoming the later. It's been two years in the making and I just wanted to say how amazing it's been.
A special thanks to Hayden, who betaed for plot, and read crappy un betaed versions of chapters for me.
And an enormous thank you and declaration of love to my dear Kathe, who had been with this story since I posted a journal on LJ over two years ago looking for a beta for "a new big project I've been thinking about". She has not only been an integral part of this story's conception and life, but has also become a truly dear friend. I will never be able to express my gratitude fully. Thank you darling.
So, one last time, thank you to everyone. I hope you enjoyed How to Build a Heart out of Ashes, and the changeling!verse, as I know I have, and I hope this isn't the end of it for you guys, as I know it isn't the end of this verse for me.
If you have any questions, thoughts, comments, ideas, anything, I can be contacted in my ask box.
