Romantic Dinner

I decided to make my boyfriend a romantic dinner a couple nights ago. However, I couldn’t find a fairly simple, cheap-ish dinner menu to follow. I wanted to do a three course meal. I’ve made Will dinners before and he has made me lots of food (he is from a very foodie family). So I really wanted to impress him.

I eventually chose to do the following:

Entree: a less creamy version of carbonara. It’s not exactly a carbonara, but instead of using ‘ham steaks’ I use bacon, and I make the sauce with milk instead of cream. Mushroom, onion, bacon all cooked up in butter and garlic. Mixed with an egg/parmesan/milk sauce which you just pour over the cooked pasta and mushroom/onion/bacon all mixed together.

Main: lamb chops and baked potatoes. Marinade with lemon, rosemary, olive oil. Let sit for a couple hours then cook them up. Baked potatoes (this is how my mum makes them) is made by cutting and peeling the raw potatoes and putting them in an tray (that can go in the oven!) then drizzling them with olive oil and herbs (rosemary and thyme usually) and salt, and putting it in the oven til crispy (normally about half an hour).

Salad: Mediterranean salad (to cut through the slightly oily main course). Red onions, feta, tomato. You can add cucumber and olives if you want but I didn’t have any. We also didn’t have balsamic vinegar, which I normally would have had with it.

Dessert: I made mini pavlovas with berries and marscapone (I bought some pavlova nests). Just piled the marscapone and berries on top. This can get messy!

He loved it. Yay me! :) Don’t forget to set the mood. We also had some candles, music and he brought some of his homemade wine (you would have red wine with stronger flavours, just FYI). It took about three hours (eating and prepping/cooking). So if you want to make someone a three course meal despite not having much experience, this is pretty good. :)
