My three day weekend was awesome!!!
Federal Holidays
In the United States in the 21st Century, there are a number of days each year designated as Federal Holidays. They are usually (but not always) defined to be the Nth Monday of a particular month and are usually (but not always) named after a person or an occasion.
On Federal Holidays, the US Federal Government is legally closed. Important functions of state still continue, but it is essentially an extra weekend day. State and local governments almost always follow suit. Federal Holidays are closely related to Bank Holidays, days where stock trading cannot happen and where banks will closed. You can generally expect every Federal Holiday to be a Bank Holiday, but it is possible for a Bank Holiday to be declared without a Federal Holiday (usually in an attempt to avert or slow down a financial crisis).
While government workers all get Federal Holidays as paid time off, non-government workers are not given the same guarantee. That said, it is common for companies to offer their salaried employees some (or all) Federal Holidays off separate from the vacation policy. This benefit usually does not extend to low paid workers, and does not apply to industries where a lot of business is expected on weekends/holidays (e.g. retail and hospitality).
Notably, the School System is part of State and Local Government, so, most students get these days off. Most everyone grows up with a fondness for these special days of extra vacation from school, even if they lose the privilege after entering the workforce.
Your characters will be familiar with all the Federal Holidays, even if they might not be able to recall all of them off hand. They will almost certainly be fond of them, with memories of their time as students (if they aren’t currently students) or with current experiences if their current job gives them time off. If they don’t get the day off, they might be aggravated to find that certain businesses are inconveniently closed.
some things
I had a three day weekend and I spent the entire first day doing literally any single thing that caught my fancy. I deep cleaned the bathroom and kitchen, I watched shows I like, I called my parents, I took a long, hot bath with matcha tea bubble bath and read a book about living on an island in Maine in the 1920′s. I went to a sober girl’s lunch birthday party and ate decadent pasta. I bought some cottage-style hand-thrown ceramic pots from the thrift store, for my kitchen. I walked around Barnes and nobles and talked to my best friend on the phone for a hilarious, laughter-filled hour. It was a perfect day.
Yesterday I went to church, did homework, and had a loooooooong conversation about depression, faith, and being single as a 30 year old with my roommate/friends. It was...difficult, but full of goodness anyway.
The antibiotics I’m finishing up for my throat infection of the last three weeks, has made my birth control not work correctly, so I got my period today. Predictably, this has come with a lot of Emotions (TM) that I do not like or want and that simultaneously make me feel like the only time I percieve things clearly is when I am like this. I went for a long walk today and cried about missing the woods near my house and my cousin’s house when we were kids, if that gives you any idea of where I’m at. Oh Well.
My friend is coming over in an hour and I wish she weren’t. I just want to listen to music from the 70s and avoid people and real life for as long as possible.
Good Things :)
Three Day Weekends - Today is President’s Day and I had it off from work. This was a much needed three day weekend. I didn’t even think I needed it, really, but I feel so rested and refreshed. It’s 4pm on a Monday afternoon and I’m dancing around my kitchen. That never, ever, ever happens.
Shopping when you don’t need anything - I did a lot of shopping with Mom this weekend and loved every minute of it because I didn’t really need anything. For once in a really long time we just browsed and tried on things and had no expectation of anything working.
Celebrating milestones - A friend’s son turned 21 this past week and his party was on Saturday. Although I don’t feel 38, it was fun to watch someone hit this milestone and be so excited about it because it feels so far behind me.

We Ask You To Ride
For a short week it’s been a loooong week. It always happens with having Mondays off. By Wednesday you’re like “Man, it’s Wednesday already! That’s great!”, then by Thursday you’re like “Jesus, it’s only Thursday?? What the hell, this week’s dragging, man!” It never fails. I haven’t had much time to put the digital pen to digital paper. I even grabbed the new Wilco record and I haven’t been able…

Can't wait for a night doing absolutely nothing after a busy day of doing absolutely nothing.
