Spring Event Raffle—THE WINNERS
She only meant to go out for a walk. It was such a beautiful day outside, and she felt like a schoolgirl, wanting to be outside than inside studying (or in her case, working). She was on her break, she should have been relaxing, preparing for her show, eating, doing something—but when she saw the traveling flower vendor, Mary couldn’t help herself.
The bursting blooms and gumdrop hues… they were so beautiful. Mary couldn’t resist: she splurged and bought seven large blossoms, hoping that he’d love them. Those flowers were her confidence, and she was full of it, with a spring in her step and a huge smile on her face. For the second time that day Mary gave in to impulse. She couldn’t resist smelling the flowers, letting their one-of-a-kind scent fill her being. But she’d gotten too big a whiff and let out a huge sneeze. The flowers she’d bought were sent scattering into the wind.
She was embarrassed by how much she cried—first from when she lost the flowers, and the second when they were returned. Her eyes were less red and puffy by the time she arrived back at the Radio Tower for her next program she’d be co-hosting with DJ Ben.
Mary clutched the bouquet close to her chest; the butterflies in her stomach only made her feel sick. A deep exhale, and Mary was left even more nervous than she’d been in her entire life. She was starting to regret this. Why Gracidea flowers, of all things? Why not tulips, orchids, carnations, roses—her cheeks flushed a bright red. Why not just tell him how you feel? a nasty little voice whispered in the back of her mind. Why beat around the bush about this?
Mary let out a sigh. “Why beat around the bush about it?” she asked, sinking back into her chair. She put the bouquet on her desk. This whole thing was a bad idea. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Someone knocked on the door. “Hello-o! You in, Mare?”
Mary jumped out of her seat—she had to look productive!—and when DJ Ben popped his head into the room, she nearly lost her mind. I can’t let him see them! She rushed around her desk to hide the bouquet—why was he here now?
“Good, you’re here! The Director just told me—oh?” Ben smiled at her, a glint of knowing in his eyes. He’d seen the bouquet. “And who are these for?”
“Ben—!” Mary started, but the DJ only laughed, ignoring her protests and grabbing the flowers from behind her back. Mary tried to snatch the bouquet back, but Ben waved her off and gave her a toothy grin. “They’re—I only—Ben, please—” Her cheeks burned.
She looked around anxiously, her gaze moving from Ben, to the door, and finally at the clock. They had less than a minute before their show began! “Uh—look at the time!” DJ Mary stuttered, gesticulating frantically. She began moving to their recording desk. “We um—our show’s about to start—We should really—”
DJ Ben chuckled and took his place across from her. “We’ll talk about this later,” he mouthed, a sly smile on his lips.
The bright ON AIR light turned on. Your regularly scheduled program was about to begin.
