Summer Work _ Alicia Campbell
Alicia strolled confidently into the office. There weren't many thing she hated more than employee evaluations and yet here she was looking at a complete stranger about to evaluate her based on her skills as an employee. She could still recent the whole thing.
Allie didn’t know the woman interviewing her - not in her sober mind anyhow - and vise versa. How was a stranger qualified to judge her? She wasn’t even dressed properly for any kind of interview. A black blazer and a floral dress was just what she wore to try and look like she wasn't a homeless whom that just happened into the hospital. After a moment of the interviewer looking the young doctor over for any physical flaws she became by asking her first question. No introductions just straight to it.
"How long have you been working with us here at HCH, Dr Campbell?"
"I've been working here since I arrived in the Hamptons nine months ago." This is going to be easy. Just answer correctly and smile at the right intervals. "Great and how well do you think you've performed in that time?"
"I've performed to the best of my abilities which I believe is what's considered a high standard but the best is never good enough so there is always room for improvement." Laid it on a bit thick there, Allie. "Are you satisfied with your job?"
No. "Of course I'm satisfied. I love working here and it's so good to get to go home at the end of the day and know I've made a difference to people's lives." Maybe it's good she doesn't actually know you. "Do you have any issues with you pay?"
Yes. "No." Alicia shook her head with a smile on her lips. "No issues at all" "Do you believe you a candidate for a promotion? Why or why not?"
"I believe that I am as much as any other employee here." I should so get a promotion... maybe not in the ER! "because I think I could be more useful if I was able to work in the area that I specialized in. I understand that the ER is some form of pathology but I could be better if I could hone my skills." Subtle. "What is the most difficult part of your job? Why?"
"Telling relatives that their loved one hasn't made it. It's almost... soul destroying. You just want to wrap yourself up in cotton wool and block out all the bad in the world. We can't so we deal with it. Come out of that room and keep working." "And the easiest part? Why do think this?"
"Paperwork. I know we all lament it and it's a right pain in the arse. It gives me a moment to breath in my day. To sit down and reflect on the cases that I've dealt with in that day." Liar! "Do you think you can continue to perform here to the best of your abilities with the current level of staff or do you believe more are required?"
"I personally could continue to work but it wouldn't be to what I consider my best. ERs are famed for being understaffed on principle but I believe it should be a priority to bring down the time in the waiting room for those who need us. That's just for the department I work in though, my experience of others has been quite pleasant."
That was it. The stranger stood up from her seat prompting her to repeat the action and stand as well. "It's been wonderful to meet you doctor Campbell. I think that's all I'm going to need from you right now." Alicia shook her hand and smirked. Maybe she had gotten away with essentially bullshitting her way through a review. "Likewise. If there's anything more don't hesitate to ask."
