Hi Nora do you have any book recs for non-fiction about the EU? I wanna know more about EU politics
Hi,
I do! However, most books on the EU that I’ve read are very specific and rather dry. Mostly on environmental governance and European values. I did not include those here but let me know if you are interested.
Crashed - How a Decade of Financial Crises Changed the World by Adam Tooze - This book is fantastic! It deals with the financial crisis of 2008 and the ensuing Eurocrisis. A lot of it is about the US but I’m including it because it really gives a lot of insight into the EU. I’ts written by a economic historian and it places the crises in in a gepolitical context. HOWEVER, it’s 600 pages long and at times very technical and a lot of people to keep track of. but towards the end i was like “this was almost like a thriller” haha
The European Union Explained: Institutions, Actors, Global Impact by Andreas Staab - This is nothing fancy but its a really good guide to understanding the EU and it’s institutions. Its also easy to read and not too long.
Of Paradise and Power: America and Europe in the New World Order by Robert Kagan - I don’t know if i necessarily agree with this book at all times but its a fun read (also its short). It’s about the different approaches to foreign policy (If anyone is familiar with IR theory, realist vs liberal). Kagan is famous for stating “Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus”
Books I haven’t read but I want to read:
Adults in the Room by Yanis Varoufakis - By the Greek finance minister during the Eurocrisis
After Europe by Ivan Krastev - Discuss Europe’s current challenges

The 2016 War and Peace is worth a watch (it’s on Hulu) and the Jane Eyre with Ruth Wilson is unmatched (I think that’s on Hulu as well but it might be Amazon).
