had a small idea for the soft au:

a potential caretaker signs up, is accepted and assigned a mech, but when they finally arrive on-site they get told by HR "so, uh. your assigned mech actually chose someone else?".

they get kept on the job, since the government/company/what-have-you wants as many employees as they can get, but they've been shoved into various menial tasks instead of what they signed up for.

caretaker obviously isn't gonna complain, they need the money, but also.. they can't help feeling a little insecure at this point.

the higher-ups and HR keep assuring them they're finding a mech to pair them with, but in classic bureaucratic fashion, it's taking forever and a day.

they're also constantly hearing about/seeing all these other people who were randomly plucked up by mechs, and somehow this hasn't happened to them.

who do you think would end up picking them/getting assigned to them? very curious!

• Maybe it’s just you? Your assigned mech had picked someone else before you’d even been able to say hello and now you’re the errand runner for the base while they try to find you someone else. And you keep hearing about aliens just grabbing people, though none of them seem to want you. But then, that’s par for the course, isn’t it? Hadn’t had much luck with other humans, so you’re not sure why you’d thought maybe it would be different with aliens. Had just thought that an alien spouse was better than nothing, but it’s like the universe delights in flipping you the bird.

• Venting in disgust as he watches a bot trailing after some pitiful, tiny organic like a lovesick schmuck, he shakes his head. What’s the appeal there? The power imbalance? There must be something going on that he’s missing and not being in the know? It bothers him. Not that he wants a human. Or even a conjunx. Settling down? Giving up on his goals? Not happening. But as he watches the human turn and smile up at the bot following them, he can’t help but feel left out of the loop.

• Maybe you should give up. That means moving back home with your family, though since you’d gotten rid of your apartment to move out here. Wanting some adventure. Some romance. And instead you’re running paperwork for the higher-ups. This isn’t exactly how you’d envisioned your life. Adjusting the cardboard box you’re carrying against yourself, you’d heard that the last person in this job had gotten nabbed by a Cybertronian in a week. Had started unzipping the top half of your coveralls to let them hang around your waist, showing more skin with only a tank top underneath. Not even a second glance. Maybe all the aliens are taken and you’re going to have to wait on the next wave. According to the news, they’re arriving daily. So where’s yours?

• Could be the fragging he supposes. How good could that be when a mech would have to hold back, though? These little humans look like they’d break easy. Rumbling as he turns a corner, something smacks into his ped and he looks down at the human sprawled on the ground, papers everywhere. “Watch it, Bambi,” you snarl and his optics narrow. And your mouth opens and closes, your expression flustered as you breathe a word he doesn’t know. That a human swear? Sounds like a swear.

• “Who you calling Bambi? Where do you get off insulting me? You know who I am?” He growls and you feel like your life should be flashing before your eyes if the universe had any cinematic propriety because you’re about to get squashed like a bug for opening your mouth without thinking. Rolling to your hands and knees to run, you scream as he bends and seizes you by the back of your coveralls. “Yoink,” he snarls as you dangle from his grip and he’s lifting you up to his optic level, expression surly. “You wanna repeat that?” He challenges you and the insane urge to say eff it and call him Bambi again lifts through you.
