Sovereign Rising Book 1: Awakening Chapter Preview
“It is time you knew your legacy. You were not the only Paladin to be brought into this world” The old main wheezed, his blind gaze resting toward the door
“Alistar was the first Paladin” Erik said, resting his elbows on his knees as he leaned forward
“Oh no…he never told you about them did he? The other Paladins that were in the world?” The old man scoffed, giving a toothy grin
Erik looked at the old man in disbelief “What are you talking about?”
“You see, Alistar was the first Paladin here, that is true, but there were others after him. These Paladins left this world, not in death, but by choice.” The old man claimed, tightening his grip weakly on the arm chair
“Where did they go?” Erik asked, interested and confused at the same time.
“They dove into the Twilight and found host in another boy who protected their queen with his life”
“You mean Zero? He died over 25 years ago” Erik said, looking toward the ground. Zero died of an old wound and age 25 years ago. Erik attended the funeral, he had to, Zero was one of his best friends.
“Yes, Zero died but his son still lives…” The old man coughed, covering his mouth
“Zero had a son? Who is he?” Erik asked, getting up to help the old man
“His human name was forgotten when he returned from the Age of Darkness…he now goes by ‘The Sovereign’” The old man said as he stood, raggedly and weakly. He leaned upon Erik for support, pointing his finger to the bed.
“Where can I find him? Do you happen to know?” Erik asked, assisting the old man to his bed
“His body lies here in the world, but corrupt by the darkness of the Abyss Father” The old man coughed again
“So…I have no hope of finding him?” Erik said glumly, holding onto the old man’s hand. It was cold, clammy and shaking ever so faintly
“In this time…no you cannot find him…but if you went back to find him before his corruption by the Abyss Father…then you could possibly save him…” The old man weakly tightened his grip on Erik’s hand “Promise me something Erik…”
“What is it old friend?” Erik said, his gaze locked onto the old man’s grey and blind eyes
“Promise me you’ll save Sovereign…promise you’ll…save…gra…so…” The old man said before closing his eyes for good, his hand falling limply and softly onto the bed
“No…Thomas no…” Erik said, his voice ragged by grief. Thomas always had been there for Erik but now, after so long, he was gone. “I promise I will save him Thomas. May you finally rest in peace my old friend.” Erik stood, patted Thomas’ limp hand and walked out, knowing that there was nothing that he could do to bring his oldest friend back to life.
