The Mayor of Halloween Town
I actually really like this goof, despite him being one of my least favorite characters of The Nightmare Before Christmas. But his role and character is to be appreciated - and I think he deserves his own post because of how little he gets from the fandom.
The Mayor was comedic relief for the film. We’ve got him rolling down a set of stairs, having his finger bitten by a spider, nearly falling off an unstable floorboard, falling over on his hearse, getting rocks thrown at him, and interrupting the movie’s OTP at the worst possible time. He’s one of the reasons I laughed while watching TNBC, and that was a little harder to get from the other characters.
What I like about the Mayor is how uncertain and anxious he is over everything. It’s clear that he isn’t in charge of Halloween - Jack is his boss, and the Mayor merely works with him and goes over the plans. He can’t do much without Jack’s approval. And the uselessness of his position is what gives us his anxious character. Him screaming into his megaphone with a constantly-cracking voice, throwing a whole search party to find Jack, and quickly agreeing with whatever his boss wants to do because he relies on him so much.
But he also has his strengths. The Mayor was the one taking charge of the town in Jack’s absence. He aids Jack with the Town Meetings, gatherings, and the Christmas preparations. Whether his role is important or not, the Mayor is Jack’s right-hand man and guides the citizens when he can. And like @tigerclaw64 told me before, he’s very talented with music and other things. He’s generally a very happy guy, and is only upset/sad when it’s necessary or when the responsibility falls on his end and not Jack’s.
And then there’s his obvious symbolism. The clever visual pun of a “two-faced” politician. This was put to use after the citizens thought Jack was “dead”, and the Mayor quietly admitted to himself that, while he agreed and supported Jack with Christmas, he secretly felt that it hadn’t been a good idea all along. It showed how quick he was to form his opinion based only on what Jack thought, and how he isn’t really capable of deciding for himself. He’s a very unstable figure to follow - and he can deceive everyone by putting on those faces of his.
I’ve talked about it before, but I also ADORE his background details. There’s no real reason for him to wear such a long hat...nor was there a reason for him to have a high desk and a high chair. It’s almost as if the Mayor tries to perch himself as high as Jack - as if he was equal with him; but it is entirely the opposite, as the Mayor relies on Jack for practically everything. He’s short and unimportant, but he portrays himself as what he wants to be seen as. And I found that a very clever background detail in the scenes he’s included in.
This guy deserves more than what he gets.
These intrusive thoughts are crazy man
