Apropos of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, I'm thinking of that time in 2023 I put every single bit I had of myself into a Nightmare Before Christmas/Coco comic :)
One of my buddies convinced me to submit some work to an actual comic book company once, and I was rejected--but I got a personalized rejection which I figure was, like, unheard of specifically since I hadn't actually submitted anything like what I figure is a Legitimate Portfolio. (I'll admit, I... still don't know what goes into a legitimate portfolio.)
Anyway, one of the things I heard was that I was a bit flat (WHICH I WAS), recommendation for both Andrew Loomis' Creative Illustration and John Buscema and Stan Lee's How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way (which my mentor immediately sent me)...
Anyway, I decided I was going to make the very very best comic page I absolutely could! And I think this was like two days of doing nothing else, and absolutely trying to focus on getting that in-three-dimensions, things-exist-in-space thing I'm traditionally quite bad at.
...but, well. It turns out that you can't just set every other thing you've got going on to make awesome pages for the possibility you might get good enough to grab the next title.
So this wound up being the only page, and I didn't really try to develop my portfolio better at that time. But... even if I do keep improving all the time, I think it still stands up on its own :-)
The way I figure it, it TOTALLY fits canon, though, right? Let's say it's in the late 90's, after the events of Nightmare Before Christmas but before Coco. Hector has been trying EVERY crazy way to reach the Land of the Living since he died, completely plausible that he'd work his way into Halloweentown somehow. (I mean, heck, who's to say that the Land of the Dead isn't a similar "town" to Halloween or Easter town, just reached in a different way?) And meanwhile, once Oogie Boogie bites it, I figure Lock is going to be bored bored bored and...
The big hiccup I never worked out is if they'd be able to talk to each other >.>
