No hate to OP, if anyone finds the post this is from DO NOT SEND THEM HATE, I just. sigh. I’ve hit my breaking point.
AN INTRUSIVE THOUGHT IS NOT ANYTHING THAT POPS IN YOUR BRAIN. AN INTRUSIVE THOUGHT IS NOT SOMETHING YOU WANT TO DO. AN INTRUSIVE THOUGHT IS NOT AN IMPULSIVE IDEA.
an intrusive thought is something experienced by people who have ocd, and it is torture. Its your brain attacking you. Intrusive thoughts have given me hell and Im so tired of the term being used as a meme.
an intrusive thought is a thought that is distressing or controlling, caused by ocd. It isnt something the recipient actually thinks, but the recipient can’t always help but belief or follow the thought. Sure, it is ‘their’ thought in the sense it appeared in their brain, but it doesn’t come from them; it comes from mental illness, and intrusive thoughts get stronger the more the recipient is distressed by them and the more the recipient gives into compulsions to cope with them (for more on compulsions, you can look into ocd, im not getting into all of it here). Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish an intrusive thought from your own beliefs, but it's not something the person actually wants or thinks, but rather their brain messing with them.
so the belief from non-ocd people that intrusive thoughts are just any impulsive idea you want to give into, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Intrusive thoughts are attacks and I can NOT stress them enough: PEOPLE WITH ACTUAL INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS DONT SECRETLY WANT TO GIVE INTO INTRUSIVE ACTIONS. the idea of doing so is terrifying and is what makes the thought so distressing in the first place.
Intrusive thoughts are related to whatever form of ocd the thinker has; if they have harm ocd, intrusive thoughts would be the sudden idea of physically hurting someone, or images of hurting people playing in your mind. If they have taboo ocd, intrusive thoughts would be unwanted sexual images or thoughts about children or relatives. If they have relationship ocd, intrusive thoughts would be that everyone secretly hates them and that their relationships will fall apart. If they have somatic ocd, intrusive thoughts would be hyperawareness of automatic bodily functions like breathing, blinking, swallowing, etc, and the thought that the awareness will never go away. There are many kinds of ocd, and I'd highly recommend looking into it further yourself to better understand what it's like living with this very misunderstood disorder.
The common link between all these types of OCD is that whatever the topic is, it's distressing to the person who is having the intrusive thoughts, and THESE ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THEIR ACTUAL THOUGHTS/DESIRES. Someone with pedophilia ocd isn't a pedophile; they are someone who has a mental illness that attacks their mind, and the concept of pedophilia is one of the topics their mind has chosen to attack them with. The same goes with all kinds of ocd.
I don't want to stab myself with a knife! In fact, the thought is rather distressing to me! And because I have ocd, the more distressing the thought is, the more likely it is to keep coming back! So I guess I'm just going to keep seeing images of stabbing myself every time I do the dishes!
"I LeT the InTrUsIvE ThOuGHts WiN"
HI! If I ( a person with ocd ) let my intrusive thoughts win, I’d have killed a lot of people and myself by now!!!!!
PLEASE STOP USING THE TERM INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS IF YOU'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT ACTUAL INTRUSIVE THOUGHTS!
THIS IS EXTREMELY HARMFUL TO PEOPLE WITH OCD! This disorder is already hugely misunderstood and using the language falsely just further spreads misinformation about what it's like living with intrusive thoughts and compulsions.
