Botox and Juvederm: What's the Difference?
These days, Botox is pretty much a household name. Even if you haven't experienced the treatment yourself, you know what Botox is, what it does, and how it can help remove wrinkles from your skin quickly with minimal pain. A lesser-known procedure/product, known as Juvederm, is available as an injectable skin filler. Much like Botox, Juvederm is used to help remove the look and feel of fine lines and wrinkles. It's also a method that's relatively painless, long-lasting, and far less invasive than plastic surgery.
But what is the difference between the two? Is one better than the other? What benefits does each provide? How do I find which option is best, and will either provide a better outcome than the other? These questions and more are answered below.
Botox works by lowering muscle movement that causes wrinkles in high-profile areas such as the forehead or near the mouth. Over time, those muscles begin to weaken, but remain active and move the skin through various facial expressions. By filling those same muscles with Botox, doctors can prevent muscles from moving, and therefore, keeping them from affecting and aging the skin. This works to reduce depressions and keeps the face looking smooth and wrinkle free.
Juvederm is slightly different in the way that it's injected and what it's designed to do for a person. Rather than being directed at the muscles, it's made to affect the soft tissue surrounding one's muscles. As we age, volume is lost within your face – often from weight loss, or just thinning of skin and underlying tissue over time. When Juvederm is inserted into the area, this skin regains its former shape and texture. By mirroring facial fat and consistency of younger days, the treatment can provide the ability to look younger.
Essentially, the difference between the two treatments lies within how they are administered, as well as where they are targeted to take effect.
Meanwhile, both versions provide lasting results through procedures that are fairly pain-free (some patients hardly feel it at all, though this depends on individual pain tolerances) and affordable. Botox and Juvederm have shown to be effective in multiple locations and can be used around the mouth, eyes, forehead, neck, and other troublesome areas. With scheduled treatments and when administered by a trained professional, patients can help eliminate wrinkles throughout the entire face, including crows' feet, smile lines, and aging lines.
