I’ve read that summer is the season for harae (祓). For this reason, many shrines hold purification rites during this time. Kotohira-Dazaifu has its annual blessing (except due to COVID-19 the events have been postponed until October). Every year they have the most unique chinowa made of ti leaves. Ti leaves are sacred in Hawaiian culture and are used for blessings and for lei. This chinowa really embodies the blending of cultures and traditions in Hawaii, especially within the Japanese community. She didn’t get to wear these leis for graduation. . Why not? . Her auntie sent them from Hawaii for her high school Filipinx Graduation this weekend, but due to the teacher strike, the ceremony is postponed. . Why? . The location was to be at Itliong-Vera Cruz School, a school named after two Fil-Am labor leaders who led farm labor strikes to fight for fair wages. To cross the picket lines during this teacher strike would be a dishonor. . So what did we do? . We still celebrated over dim sum with family, and she wore her cap and gown with the leis for some photos. We can’t waste these beautiful flowers and that scent of tuberose. . So now what? .
