The real-life shrines of Sailor Moon

One of the main characters in Sailor Moon is Sailor Mars, also known as Rei Hino, who’s a schoolgirl and a Shinto princess at Hikawa Jinja. The manga shrine was modelled on a real shrine called Hikawa Jinja (氷川神社) in Azabu-Jūban; the anime shrine was modelled on another Hikawa Jinja in Akasaka. Both are branch shrines of the main Hikawa Jinja in Ōmiya, Saitama.

The shrine is written 火川 in the manga, but it's 氷川 in real life. Interesting difference: 火 is fire, 氷 is ice, both can be pronounced hi. The kanji 川, kawa, is river. Sailor Mars’s element is fire, which could explain that change. Here’s a comparison of the real shrine’s entrance and the anime shrine’s entrance:

Yana’s next master-servant story (maybe)

“[Concept:] A young boy (10yo, optionally a girl) who comes from a happy and wealthy noble family goes out to the town looking for adventures and accidentally wanders into the slum where he meets a light-fingered street child (12yo), and after going through one thing or another, that street child starts working at the noble’s manor as a page boy and gets trained and drilled by the family’s old butler in order to become a good servant/butler one day.”… I want to draw that kind of light-hearted master-servant story… (X)

[Speaking of delinquents] As for Agni, he’s actually of *higher social status than Soma, so while it’s true that he’s an ex-delinquent, he’s a noble delinquent (?) in a way. (X) [*note: referring to the caste system according to which Brahmin (Agni) > Kshatriya (Soma), for more information reread ch17]

The only reason I came up with this concept is that I wanted to see a scene where the delinquent is smoking a low quality cigarette at the servants’ entrance and then the old butler pats his head with a shoehorn and angrily says “The smell [of smoke] will get stuck in your attire.” (X)

There’s really no special reason for this concept, it’s just that I was wondering - while there are a lot of different types of butlers in Kuroshitsuji - if there’s any type of butler I haven’t drawn yet and I realized it’s the "young butler”. I read the book “The History of Image of Butlers in Japan” which I was given the other day and I was surprised to know that there are more younger butlers in Japanese media. (X) [*note: Yes, there’s a book called “The History of Image of Butlers in Japan ” and you can buy it on amazon]

Sebastian’s behaviour

English translation:

Lately, people often ask me questions such as “Sebastian doesn’t say something like this, does he?” or “He doesn’t do things like that, does he?” Actually, he is prepared and willing to do almost everything (except telling lies). He’s a demon, that’s why he’s outspoken and resilient. I’d rather say it would be a bit out of character if he were too kind or too emotional.

When my editor K writes a story about Sebastian [*note1], for example, he tends to portray him as a very chaotic person (in a positive way, though). And also as creepy one. (lol)

Whenever there’s a serious original scene or a scene with sexy content, someone from the anime staff would ask me “I don’t know what Sebastian would do in this situation, so I leave it to you!” My team and I do not only consider Sebastian to be “handsome and competent” but also think of him as a “*noukin sh*thead [*note 2]”. We would consequently get confused when the anime staff, [on the contrary], treat him so gently. In my opinion, Sebastian doesn’t really think that much about his behaviour. ^^; However, the staff often tell me that they find my decisions as to what I “accept / don’t accept (OOC) as Sebastian’s nature” somewhat vague and confusing.

I mean, if necessary for the plot development, it is perfectly fine for Sebastian to stand on a piano and play ‘Rondo alla Turca’ with his bare feet. I once [wanted to include this scene in the manga but] gave up on this idea since I wasn’t sure if I can draw it. However, maybe I can do it now.

*note1: Iirc editor K once wrote an official Kuro short story back in 2010.

*note2: ‘noukin (脳筋＝脳みそ筋肉)’ literally means ‘muscle brain’ and usually refers to someone who tries to solve everything using his ‘muscles’, i.e. his muscular strength or physical power, rather than acting rationally by using his brain. It does not mean that the person is aggressive or violent, it’s just that they do not think that much before they act.^^; A good example for a ‘noukin’ character in the Kuro series is Greenhill from the School Arc. Another fine example for Sebastian being a ‘noukin’ is chapter 102, where he tried to destroy the tank solely with his kick and a punch, i.e. with physical power.

English translation:

“ […] The reason why I drew this ‘fairy-talish’ illustration today is that my editor K-san, who’s on twitter, told me that the actress Ms Kaori Manabe tweeted 'Sebastian Michaelis from Kuroshitsuji is my prince!’ and I was so astonished, because this is a great honor which is more than I deserve! More over, it seems like Ms Manabe owns the ’Bitter Rabbit’ as well!? Omg what is happening !? Even though we live in the same country, I have the same feeling right now as when I was told that there are Kuro readers in France and Germany too. It just hasn’t really sunk in yet and hearing that a prominent person like her is reading Kuroshitsuji is like hearing a story of a distant country… (Toboso grew up in countryside)

So this reminded me of the fact that there are indeed many women both in Japan and other countries who support Sebastian. That’s why I drew this illustration of prince-style Sebastian, it’s dedicated to to them. I tried my hardest to draw a prince, since my knowledge about princes is solely based on Disney princes, *tennis playing princes and *Maji Love princes. [*Japanese popular anime/manga series] To all the princesses around the world, thank you for reading Kuroshitsuji !!!!

However, if Sebastian knew this, he would probably say: "It would be presumptuous of me to call myself prince. I’m just one hell of a butler.” Furthermore, he’s rather a beast than a prince.

At about the same time, my assistant happened to meet a lady who likes Kuroshitsuji and she told me about their conversation. That said lady said she likes Sebastian, so my assistant asked her: “What exactly do you like about Sebastian? (This question alone proves how unpopular he is among our staff)” and she answered with a nice smile “He’s so kind♥”. My assistant, not being able to deny nor affirm that comment, came back home trudginly and told me about this little incident (lol) Hmm… Sebastian is described as 'mad sadist’, 'brute’ or 'nasty bad guy’ in anime magazines, but depending on the person he might also make a kind impression…. I guess!!? I think our team’s topic for discussion for the next few days will be 'Sebastian’s kind moments which I can think of’. In our recent meeting though, no one could come up with a single example of 'Sebastian being kind’. “

Can we talk about Mey-Rin?

The replica of Mey-Rin’s favourite [rifle] Mosin-Nagant (which has a total length of 120cm [3′11′′]) looks really impressive. When I draw her, I think about how fit she actually must be considering she can run in the mountains while carrying said rifle as well as two Luger P08 pistols (which are big and heavy) and extra ammunition. - Toboso

Yana’s comments on comicbook vol.27

“Kuroshitsuji comicbook vol.27. It seems I have the bad habit of making flashback scenes too fast-paced. Every month I was like “Next month, I will eventually conclude the flashback and we’ll get back to the present timeline”. The reason for my impatience is that I believe that ‘one’s present is more important than one’s past’. However, my editor told me “If you want to draw [OC’s] past, it’s now or never,” so in the end I was able to sit down and draw the flashback [to my heart’s content].” (X)

“I had originally planned to conclude the flashback with 3 chapters lol. But my editor said “There’s no way you can do that!!”, so I drew both the happy times as well as the tough times [of OC’s past] elaborately. […]” (X)

“My favourite scene [in vol.27] is the “What should I do” scene [*ch137, see above]. It’s a monologue that only the readers will ever know. The biggest challenges for me in terms of art were… the moths and also the moon phases in the background. I kept scratching my head as I had to calculate the moon phases by counting the days passing until the day of Sebastian’s summoning. (I slightly corrected them in the comicbook.)” (X)

“This means, that you can calculate the day and time of [Sebastian’s] summoning from [the progression of] the moon phase starting from the day the twins got kidnapped. But please think of it as a very rough estimation lol. People sometimes ask me [about the exact day of Sebastian’s summoning] - maybe because he doesn’t have an [official] birthday?” (X)

It seems Yana really was *very* confused about the moon phases xD She pretty much redrew them all in the comicbook (especially ch135) and she also corrected these lines accordingly:

So the night of Sebastian’s summoning was a full moon, that means we can roughly estimate his “birthday” as OC’s butler and also RC’s death date as January 20 or 21.
