Yesterday, I was at Fushimi Inari Taisha and a "chinowa" was erected at the entrance to the shrine. In just a few days the annual Nagoshi-no-harae (夏越の祓) or "Summer Purification" is celebrated. Usually held at the end of the first six months of the year. Thus June 30th is a day when many people all over Japan visit a shrine to purify themselves from misdeeds and impurities. A Chinowa is erected on the pathway leading to a shrine on the days of purification. Worshipers at the shrine pass through the ring as an act of purification from misdeeds, impurities or bad luck.

Today marks one year since I started drawing regularly again. Time flies! Starting Inktober 2019 with "Day 1: Ring". I've always wondered what those circular straws are in Japan. They're chinowa 茅の輪, a large ring made of reed placed on the path to a Shinto shrine every six months for the summer purification ritual. It's believed to purify whoever passes through it.

I had the experience of walking in a figure-eight shape through a large chinowa (large hoop made of bundled grasses) in front of a Shinto shrine in Kanazawa, Japan, as a summer purification opportunity. I think my little pre-ghost characters would love to do the same, even though they are already pure.

I’ve read that summer is the season for harae (祓). For this reason, many shrines hold purification rites during this time. Kotohira-Dazaifu has its annual blessing (except due to COVID-19 the events have been postponed until October). Every year they have the most unique chinowa made of ti leaves. Ti leaves are sacred in Hawaiian culture and are used for blessings and for lei. This chinowa really embodies the blending of cultures and traditions in Hawaii, especially within the Japanese community.
