Happy Pride from Giaea!

i’d thought about colors and characters and the rainbow flag before, but now i’m doing something with it: placing some of my characters on corresponding stripes of the 9-stripe rainbow flag. It’s mainly based on color schemes, but many coincide with the original meanings of the colored stripes.

I want to do more of these with other flags, so keep an eye out!

”Champion” by Fall Out Boydefinitely not one i would have thought of as sad before i considered it for tilvy. but considering the feel of the song, the screaming lyrics, and the fact that tilvy was literally tortured for weeks? also the first lines: “i’m calling you from the future / to let you know we made a mistake”? tilvy in the dungeon, thinking about sill. thinking, for just one desperate second, that maybe he was right. maybe this can’t be done. maybe she’s just a stupid girl blinded by the chance of seeing her parents again, and now she’ll die here.no. “i’m back with the madness / i’m the champion / of the people who don’t believe in champions” she’ll save tiefindiel. she’ll show sill.“if i can live through this / i can do anything” as ceverino resumes his, ah, focus on her.but yeah. this is tilvy in the dungeon.

“Be Still” by The Killersi don’t usually use this one for ships, but first verse is cal stroking tilvy’s hair during a quiet moment in cal’s room, when ceverino’s attention is somewhere not on his prisoner. cal encourages her to stay strong. she doesn’t know a whole lot about this halfling girl, but she knows tilvy has a strength in her that has enchanted cal and that might even be able to save their home.then tilvy working with the rebellion after her escape, throwing herself into it to distract herself from thinking about calarel in the very heart of evil, acting as the rebellion’s spy.and in the final “rise up like the sun and labor till the work is done” i hear the ritual to bring calarel back to life and tilvy whispering to her, “we won.”

i’ll do these for my halfling girl tilvy haylock cos she’s been on the brain lately!

1. Them as a child

Tilvy is physically the smallest and weakest of her friends, but that makes sense; she’s the only halfling in a city of dwarves. And she makes up for it by being the fastest and the lightest on her feet. She begs Ma--Yara--and Da--Haderon--for stories about her other mother and father, the ones she’s never met, and she dreams of being an adventurer like them, of finding them and joining them on the quest they’ve been on since leaving her with Ma and Da when she was a baby.

Ma and Da don’t have the heart to tell Tilvy that Nita and Geron haven’t been heard from since very soon after leaving Tilvy with them. They don’t think she’d believe them if they told her, even gently, that her biological parents are probably dead. Tilvy’s too stubborn.

2. Them several years past their main adventure

Princess Consort Tilvy Haylock is as headstrong as ever, though it’s been tempered now by experience and by the achievement of her dreams. She works to help Tiefindiel heal from the decades of Ceverino’s cruel rule, and is unofficial bodyguard and conscience to Lord King Tyvarian Xeylandir. When not on official duties, she spars with her cousin Sill to keep both their skills sharp, even though there’s little need now that they’re both married into royalty. Tilvy spends every moment she can with her wife Calarel, which is much of the time thanks to their positions on Tyvarian’s council of advisors and as ambassadors of Tiefindiel. Now and then, she travels to her old home Hammermine to visit Yara and Haderon and the rest of her adoptive family, bringing news of their friends Nita and Geron and the rest of Tiefindiel.

It snuck up on her, but for the first time, Tilvy is truly and completely happy.

13. Them in formalwear

The diadem sits on Tilvy’s head. It’s the only part of her hairstyle that is ever truly neat. Her dress is made up of paler versions of Tiefindiel’s teal and gold, matching her hair and her blue-green eyes and cinched with an ivory-colored bodice. She still wears little jewelry besides two gold cuffs on her wrists, but she looks as regal as a three-foot-tall woman with untamable straw-colored hair can. Even the scar slashing up her face--a memento of her time as prisoner of the late usurper Ceverino--only augments her princely appearance. She wears the title Princess Consort like she was destined for it--and perhaps she was.
